    Stihl/deere partnership!!!

These dealers are a little green on the stihl brand, saws, parts,&acc.i think once they have a season under their belt, they will be just as handy with stihl as they are the green stuff!!we buy a ton of stuff from our local dealer, and this has worked out very well for me. We have bought 3 new saws in the last month, and all 3 were 5% over dealer cost!!! I dont know any stihl (only) dealers that are willing to deal like that!

My JD dealer is flat out incompetent. They know nothing about saws. They don't fix saws either. So....when that Stihl you bought from the green tractor giant needs service, you need to take it to the REAL independent Stihl shop that is being bled to death by big green. Guess how much he wants to help you with that tractor store saw that you bought at cost plus 5? Maybe not so much.

Support your little guy because John Deere sure as heck doesn't give a poop about you. They screw over guys on warranty issues that buy *edit* really freaking expensive machines, how do you think they're gonna treat you when all you bought was a few hundred buck saw?

I had a guy for the first time ever look for Bio Degradable bar oil, he said that the local JD Chain that recently picked up Stihl was carrying it. I told him that we don't carry since it retails for about 25$ a gallon, and how we have a hard time selling the regular Stihl at 12.99$ a gallon. The JD dealer told him that he should buy it since they won't be selling conventional bar oil as of 2010. I laughed and said, that's news to us.

our farm has spent several millions of dollars in jd machinery in the last 60 years, and all from the same dealership.i work on all my own saws. However,my local dealer,as well as all jd dealers that sell stihl, will be required to have stihl factory trained techs. I think most dealers will send the lawn&garden techs to stihl for school.as for jd,you must not know much about that company,im sure there are both good and bad dealers out there. Do you think that deere wold be where they are at today if they didn't care about their customers???? Jd is the only ag/construction equip. Mfr that has not been bought/sold out! That in my mind says alot about a company in todays world, don't you think??

If the shop rate at the JD dealers is the same for saws as it is for equipment, some people will walking funny when they leave after they get their saw worked on after the warranty has expired.

I can see it now.. "Well the book shows an hour to install your starter rope, so that and parts come to 100 bucks"

Boy, They must really bend you north of the border boys over. We got some pricey deere machines in the shed down this way, but nothing that pricey.

Not sure how this venture is going to work out. Deere hasn't been the best example of support in other deals. Since about 1970, track record seems to go with cheapest source for parts. The name doesn't carry the weight it used to.

Maybe they'll rule the world though.

Two local deere dealers here.....one prices stihl saws same as independent dealers in area and other deere dealer hasn't bothered stocking stihl to date.

Even if the partnership doesn't go Deere's way. I think they'll be just fine.

    I agree.

I think if some of the other original U.S. ag equipment makers would have followed deere's lead with production costs and joint ventures with anything under the sun, they too could have rolled on for many years.

Remember factory at Quincy, IL losing more and more OEM part manufacturer to deere quickly in the early 1970's. Allis-Chalmers, Massey-Ferguson, International, Ford, Case, and many more stayed with the Quincy plant. Deere stopped getting many parts produced there and picked many of them up from Japan. It seemed ridiculous as per spindle in a wagon running gear they saved $0.05. Dad was fairly steamed and quit the factory and sold his deere tractors.

Deere is worldwide though, so price/competition should go to best source for success. The key is keeping the quality and not falling to the big name syndrome covering for high price on low quality here and there or everywhere. If you get to the everywhere, the purchaser is going to be gone.

You ever priced out their construction equipment? They make something for every tax bracket Maybe not a quite million...but you can get up there in a hurry! What's a new combine worth with all the bells and whistles? I used to fabricate custom cooling system components for a big JD dealer that sold equipment for mining that couldn't be run without overheating. They marked up our custom fab job rads and fans by almost triple. They find every way possible to get out of warranty on something. They outsource parts all over asia. But none of that really matters, cuz I don't have to buy thier stuff...

BUT - a local Stihl dealer two towns away from me just went belly up. Oddly enough less than a year after the JD dealer in town was commanded from on high to sell Stihl. So, I lost a knowledgeable guy running a small business and I'm left with John Deere. They don't stock Ultra oil. They don't stock pro saws. They don't stock parts for saws they don't sell (ie pro saw parts). They don't do special orders. They told me they don't fix saws (maybe they have to train a kid yet?). I can't understand why someone would rather deal with a multinational monstrosity than a local guy with experience and incentive to help you. JD has neither.

That's my point. They are focussed on big ticket heavy machinery. They could care less about chainsaw clientelle. Its probably about as important to them as selling a new line of oil filters....
