I wish all my saws went as easy as this one. I put a carb kit and a fuel filter in it. Thats it. Was very dirty but underneath was a saw lightly used. The bar is pretty banged up an worn so ill be replacing that. The chain is very dull and missing teeth, so it will be treated to a new chain as well. I tuned the carb and wow this saw revs!! plenty of power left, my dad was eyeing it and tested it, I think i lost my saw already!

This is a great saw.I was using mine just yesterday cutting through mesquite. This thing starts on the first pull when warm and gets great mileage, compared to my O28. It is the first saw in the truck. Best $85 I ever spent on a saw, true this is not an XP model but it gets the mission completed.Buy the way, I am running Woodsman Pro 28RC on a 16 BC. (Baileys) Best chain for under $10. Ken

Thanks guys, it has the 16" bar and I'm sure will pull it just fine. I will be replacing the B/C. I've heard nothing but good things about this saw. I didn't even bother to check the comp, and I always check, but this feels as good as my dolmar.

I inherited an old 51 from my dad recently. Kind of the opposite deal from your situation, it was running really badly and my dad was tired of fiddling with it and he just parked it in the barn.
I messed with it and got it going. It is finicky running, but when it is on that saw screams.

When I have the time and money I will get into it and try to solve the inconsistent running. In the meantime when the 371 is down and I need a saw that little 51 has proven to be very handy.

Sounds like you might have to fight dad for yours Lol

I'd try a carb kit in it, if it runs sparatically, and great at times, no reason it shouldn't be easily fixed. Carb kits on ebay for like 8 bucks.

My 51 runs a 18" b/c just fine but that is in softwood. It is one fine saw!

Great looking saw. I hadn't realized they used to encase the muffler like that...I bet I know why they don't do that anymore. I'm surprised that plastic on that top is not fired which is over the top of the muffler. The guy must not have used it very much at all. I wouldn't mind finding one in that type of condition...:-)

Hope your Pops enjoys it, great looking saw. More so, great that you can give it to him...that's goodness.

What size is the engine/cylinder on these? Must predate my 350, which is a 2002. What year is it? Must be like mid-late 90s?

The saw is 50cc's, and came out in '90 (according to acres) its weird with this saw. The power head does look nearly new but the b&c are junk, the saws I find usually match. The safety stickers say 1993.

That's what I was thinking too Joe. Try a carb kit and then if that doesn't do it I will get into it deeper.

We've been busy cutting and as long as we have my 371 and his 365 that I modded to a 372 we rarely get the old 51 out. When it slows down I'm looking forward to getting it tuned up good. Not only is it a hell of a runner, a lot of days my back is killing me and it's alot easier on it than my 371 is.

I have a 20" bar on my 51 pulling 3/8 full comp chain like a hot knife through butter. I've had it in 24 in DBH cherry logs with no problems. In that size wood you could bog it, but I let the chain do the work. I file my chains daily or sometimes more often depending on the trees I'm cutting.
