    Poulan Wild Thing carb question...

Hi all.. gotta question... i decided to dig my old poulan wild thing off the tool bench last night to try and get it running again since as of right now I only have one saw at home (loaned out the stihl to my dad) and I hate to go out cutting with just one saw in case a pinch happens.... anyhow, the 'wild thing' quit running on me one day last year while cutting with it and i just put it up and never messed with it till now. I am getting fuel to the cylinder and I am getting good spark. every once in a while it will fire for a few seconds but then dies and won't fire again for a good while.... I found on a website what the supposed carb settings are from factory for H/L screws and adjusted them to that but still nothing.... I know it's good fuel cause it's the stuff I just mixed up for my husqy about a week ago.

Does anyone know what the carb adjustment settings actually are on this saw? Or any ideas what the problem could actually be?

First thing I would check would be cracked fuel line. Yeah, it's getting gas but how much? I had the same experience last week with leaf blower. Ran and then stop. Tore down and sure enough old fuel line had cracked. Would start ok when cold and line compressed...after using and warm...crack leaked gas.
    Hope this helps

You could have picked up a goober in the fuel line. Can you fish out the pick up in the fuel tank? Pull the screen off the end of the fuel line and blow in it. This happened once to my trusty Woodshark. All was well after that.

I found two different answers to this question but not sure if either are right... one showed you run the H/L screws in until 'dead' or just barely snug, then back out 1 1/2 turns... the other said run the screws in till dead, then back out 2 turns.... I tried both of these, and a ton of 1/8 turns in/out from these settings and still no luck.

When you pump the primer bulb does gas go back into the tank? Since it fires for a few seconds and then dies, you probably have fuel through the carb. Most likely your carb requires cleaning and maybe a new carb kit. The WT carb has an internal non-replaceable check valve that can get clogged, sometimes some low pressure air will clear it out. Don't try to clear it with a piece of wire, you will trash the carb. Make sure the fuel lines are ok and the in tank fuel filter is still attached and clean. Initial setting for high and low speed needles are 1-1/4 out. If the carb is shot, consider the price between new and the rebuild kit, I usually just get a new carb, they have been updated and automatically set the fast idle when the choke is pulled, instead of using the trigger lock

Thanks for the advice! When I pump the primer bulb, I do see a lot of air going through the line that runs from the tank to the carb and it feels like there's not a very good seal/suction on the bulb.

update on the poulan.... checked the filter, it's good, blew through the fuel line and no obstructions with no apparent leaks..... also adjusted the carb to the specs listed above... still having no luck at all with getting it started...

    2. What color is the spark ?
    3. Pull muffler see if it is clogged anywhere
    4. inspect the carb adapter see if it is loose or has a crack
5 check carb mount gasket for wear
