    Poulan not oiling

I know all of you have gone through this before...I have a Poulan with a 20" bar. I believe the model number is 2775. The chain oiler does not work. I bought a new oiler and installed it and to my surprise, it doesn't work either. The saw appears to be clean and all the hoses appear to be there. What can I do to it now to make it oil?

did you check that the oil tank, lines, and fittings are clear? is the oil passage in teh bar clean? assuming this saw is new to you, does it have the right bar on it, and do the oil holes line up? is there a vent and filter in teh oil tank, and are they clean?.....is teh new pump the right one, and is it meshing properly with teh drive gear on teh shaft...this may be too simple, but is there bar oil in it??

Seems I had a vent get plugged up on my 2750 and it wouldn't oil after the tank drew a vacuum.

Stripped a gear once and the new oiler took a while to start drawing. I let it idle on it's side. After a few miuntes it was golden.

It's just as probable to be what the others have mentioned also.

The old oil pump gears weren't stripped but they were worn down quite a bit. I thought I checked the lines when I put the pump in but I'll check them again. As for the vent, I didn't check it but I'll look for it. I didn't buy this saw new and it hasn't oiled since I've had it. I took the bar off of it and started it up and didn't get any oil out of the hole, but when it sat overnight it leaked a bunch of oil out of it. Now that I think of it, I believe I did blow through the oil hole with compressed air and the oil cap off of it and it was clear. Maybe there's something wrong with the new pump. I'll probably tear it back down and check it again, I hate to ruin a good bar and chain.

I didn't pay much for the saw or the pump so I didn't save any receipts. It's been awhile since I first worked on this saw and since I have a couple of other saws I just put it back and came back to it this week to see if I can finally fix the thing. I'll go back and clean it out again and check the pump and vents.

I saw where Rural King has the 20" Poulan Pro on sale This Thursday only for $89.95. I'm tempted to go buy one if they're not sold out and use mine for a parts saw.

when you blew it out, did you blow any hoses off teh fittings,,, i use carb cleaner to blow out and clear any hoses ...check the drive gear closely, is it possible there are teeth missing on it, or is there any plastic left behind from the old pump gear...

That oiler system is as simple as they come. I mean theres only a pickup line and filter, a pump assy including the worm gear and the black rubber seal behind the bar plate.

Seems to me that Poulan did have some pumps that didnt last long at first and the replacements had a different color plastic houseing to them that seems to last very well.

Sounds like a gear problem on this one. New pumps are cheap for these and when I install them I use some red silicone behind the bar plate to seal the pump outlet up better and seems to help the dripping when setting.

If I remember correctly, the old pump was black plastic and the new one is white. Since I'll probably tear it all down again I'll probably go ahead and buy another new pump just in case the first one was defective. I don't think they're but about $5 or $6. Thanks for the replies.

Matt 9923, I would if I were a full time logger. Thing is I don't use a 20 inch saw very much other than when I need to cut up a tree trunk or a big limb. I mostly cut up firewood for my wood stove so I mostly use smaller chain saws. Since I found this one cheap I thought I could surely cut up maybe one tree a year if even that. It would be a waste of money in my case to run out and buy a new Stihl or Husky or whatever. I've used it a few times and it does cut good. This saw will probably sit in my garage most of the year without being touched.
