    Stihl 046 leaking oil

I am a brand new member.

I bought a new bar, chain sprocket, and chain for my Stihl 046 and installed them. I am now having a problem of lots of chain oil dripping and running down in the area where the oil is supposed to enter the chain, when I run the saw. I adjusted the screw on the bottom of the saw to the position where least oil should enter the bar. When I do that it basicially does not throw oil off the chain like it should, but the oil still runs down, as before I adjusted the screw.

I took off the thin plate where the oil runs through to the bar and cleaned it and that area of the saw. The plate does not appear to be bent, etc, but I am wondering if for some reason it is not sealing to the bar as it should. Any thoughts would be welcomed.

    Thanks... Deak

Did you check to see if the hole in the bar lines up with the oiler slot in the case? You also might want to check the hole in the bar to be sure it is not obstructed. I had a new bar that had what looked like left over powder coat baked in there...

Does your saw have both the inner and outer guide plate? What brand of bar and chain did you just put on your saw? Why I ask this is that some multi fit bars have the oil supply holes drilled right through the bar, the chain oil tuns right through if there is not an outer guide plate to stop it.

    Thanks for suggestions...

In reply to the two responses to my question about leaking oil:

Pioneerguy 600, Yes, it has the inner and outer guide plates; It was a Stihl brand bar and chain.

SkippyKtm, The holes on the new bar are in the exact place as my old bar and the bar is the exact same length; and the oil holes were not obstructed.

I took the saw with the new bar on it to the dealer where I bought the bar. I told him I had not attempted to saw wood, but just was trying to break in the bar as Stihl reccomended by running for 3 minutes while not sawing. He said if you run it like that the oil will run down the case, as the wood soaks up the oil when you saw wood. In all the 10 years I have had this saw, oil never ran down the case, but only leaked a couple of drops after it sat after I used it.

I did put on my old chain before taking it to the shop to verify it leaked a lot of oil, as the new chain did, and it did the same thing. He noticed my old chain needed to be sharpened, which I knew, so I had him do it since I was there. After he sharpened it and reinstalled the bar and chain, I took it outside to a big log they had to test it, and lo and behold it did not leak when I was not sawing wood or when I did. I know now that it does not leak, but I don't know what I may have been doing wrong. He took it apart when I first got there and found everything ok.

So now am wondering when I break it down the next time whether it will leak or not. Thanks for your suggestions to check.
