Thread: Poulan Muffler Exhaust direction?

    Poulan Muffler Exhaust direction?

    Have a Poulan 3400 close to running and have studied the muffler and I see no exit for the exhaust. All my other saws have a distinct hole. Is this why everyone is modifying their mufflers? Any need to change the one I have? Thanks for all the help folks.......Be Blessed.

    The 3400 exhaust exits thru the rear of the muffler into a shell and is redirected back out around the front.

    Where is Mark he has a thread that shows modding that muffler. I looked and didnt see it. Like already stated the exhaust is directed backwards towards the engine then deflected forwards.
    I enjoy working alone, especially when I'm all by myself.

    sounds like my poulan/craftsman wildthing muffler.

    i brazed the tiny exhaust gills in the back shut and drilled a 1/2" hole in the front.
    ymmv.
    current wants:
    john deere 66sv clutch cover (it's a yellow echo 610evl).
    18" k041 poulan or k095 small mount husky bar 3/8 0.50
    a running homelite 3100.
    stihl 020av flywheels

    Wouldn't the 1/2" hole w/o closing the rear outlets produce better results? That and enlarging the baffle holes would seem to free up more exhaust. Just a thought, not a criticism.

    they are less of an outlet and more of a slit. they might have been the equivelent of a 3/16 hole.
    the inner baffle was just a big screen. the saw had been ported (don't laugh) and seemed to work well with the exhaust mods i did.
    again, ymmv.

    I gotcha, you used the spark screen as the baffle! Good idea. I typically remove spark screen and just drill out baffle holes. Did you open up both the exhaust and intake ports? I've done the former but haven't gotten the courage yet to do the intake side. No laughing. The 3400 is a strong reliable saw and easy to work on. That's why I have 4 of them.

    i just checked acres site and i have the wrong animal in mind!
    mine was a craftsman wildthing clone.
    the 3400 looks like a real saw!

    You are correct.

    The proper name of the center baffle you speak of is a diffuser.

    The external outlet is not as critical to me as it can be oversized and not matter if the diffuser is still undersized.

    Getting the diffuser opened up to the right flow seems to make the difference to me.

    Went from 1/4" to 5/16". Mark. Couldn't remember what you told me, but 3/8" seemed too large as the diffuser holes would have then almost run together.

    BTW - that saw seems to rip now. Been raining here since I drilled out the diffuser. Hope to get it in some bigger wood this week and make a video to post.
