It could be a number of things. First check the fuel line and impulse. They could be soft and collapsing. Second check the kill switch wire coming off the coil, make sure there are no bare spots grounding out to the main body. Start there and if that doesnt get ya, post back up here.

If the cutout is almost instant then I think you are on the right track, it is most likely electrical problem so you have to chase it down. A shorted out wire from the coil to the off/on switch or a chaffed through insulation on the sparkplug wire could be the cause. Even a bad spark plug can cause erratic operation, try a new plug or a known good used one. Is your saw an Electronic model or does it have points/condenser setup? Point cleanliness and proper gap can cause partial shutdown if they are not adjusted properly, sometimes there is a problem with the electronic module but check out all the other things before changing the module.

I know how to read instructions but I seldom follow them.

Its good to dabble in the sewer, you will really appreciate getting out.

    "i don't need a gun, i've got a DONK!"

it's probably not your problem but............................
that saw is old enough to look at replacing the plug wire. i had an 020av that i chased gremlins on forever.... i bought some stihl plug wire on the ebay and replaced it. where my wire ran through the body of the saw, the old wire had chaffed and would momentarily ground out producing the same instant, random cut-out that you have. and it generally did it when i revved it up (vibrations?).
    current wants:
john deere 66sv clutch cover (it's a yellow echo 610evl).
    18" k041 poulan or k095 small mount husky bar 3/8 0.50
    a running homelite 3100.
    stihl 020av flywheels
    pm me.
