stihl 028wb shutting off at idle

hey guys i got a stihl 028 wood boss off of a guy today for $50 didnt think that was a bad deal seeing how i paid $275 for my 028vb at an auction 2 years ago and i also have an 029 that i bought new a few years ago so im not new to these saws but on this 028wb that i just bought it will start up run fine when sawing and running open but when idleing it dies but will start back up but as soon as you let off the throttle it dies a few seconds later. anyone know what might be wrong?

Sounds fuel related, try turning the L screw out a little more, if that`s a no go turn the screw all the way in until it lightly seats, don`t force it. Now turn the screw back out 1 1/4 turn and start the saw, it should idle there but a little tweak in or out may be needed as the carb diaphagrms probably are not new.
Try this and get back and let us know how it works.

I would make sure the air filter is clean and set the carb screws to 1 turn out from lightly seated. If that quick fix doesn't work then I would do the standard vac and pressure tests. Good idea to run those tests anyway since the saw is new to you. Then you will know what you are dealing with. Some others will be along with some better info but maybe this will get you started.

alright thanks guys i will try that tomorow the saw is out in the garage and im in for the night i was actually planning on taking the saw to a stihl dealer in town to get it looked at and hopefully fixed but ill try that first. and the first thing i looked at was the air filter and it was soaked in gas so i took the air filter off of my 028 parts saw that i have layin around that i picked up at an auction for $5

The filter soaked in gas to me indicates needing a carb kit, the fact that it's letting too much fuel past the carb and into the crankcase then it comes back through the carb into the filter. Maybe might not need a kit, just a good cleaning tho. Worth a try to give it a look yourself, shop prices aren't getting any cheaper.

the filter got soaked in gas because i had the saw upside down while i was messin with something and gas ran out.

points wear, wires chafe, and coils can get squirly... especially ones with a trigger unit to replace the points.

If it is all intact I would say 50 bucks was not much at all. You will get it figured out. Lots of good info from educated folks.

Manage to put the pics on. For $50 is very difficult to go wrong.

yeah i tried putting a link to photobucket like i do on other forum sites but it wont work, when i get home tonight i will just list the pics as an attatchment. but the saw is very clean, has a brand new chain on it. nothing is broke i just think it might need a new fuel line because of it shutting off at idle but i have one of them from my dads 028 parts saw.

$50.... you're kidding. I paid $170 for a used 028 AV Super in 1990, and it's still my bread and butter firewood cutter. Shoot, I'll drive to Carlisle and pick it up from you for $50.

oh i dont want to get rid of it but do you live near carlisle?
