I have used the inserts, they work well. I used J-B Weld on the threads when I put it in the jug, it works as permanant loc tite. Here's the kit I used........

It cost like 50 bucks but you can buy the inserts seperately so the real cost is the tools which I think are well worth it. I used it on my 044 with great results, you just need to make sure the insert is fully expanded or it will unscrew with the plug.

That sounds like a great, easy to use solution. Does it countersink the surface for the shoulder to set on? Or does it just cause the plug to stick up a little higher? I'm interested because the threads are a little buggered up on this 084 I just got. It's holding fine for now, but may not stay that way.

Is this the kit here? LINK. Looks like it's cheaper than you remembered, only $35. Here are the different inserts. LINK. Do these mechanically lock into place?

They have a tapered driver that sets the insert in place. You skrew it in to where you want it, then put the driver in and strike it with a hammer. It peins the top of the insert over and locks it to the cylinder. I did all that, plus the J-B. It was on a 262.

That's for the Autozone inserts, correct? I assume that tool's sold seperately. I definately like the idea of a mechanically locked in insert.

Yup, auto zone. I think it came as a kit, then you can buy more inserts as you need them.

I wouldn't use loctite/thread locker on a Heli-Coil, particularly on a spark plug repair as it could easily restrict the heat flow path from the plug to the head making the plug run several heat ranges hotter than it was designed to.

Heli-Coils lock themselves in place without thread locker, I've never had one move and I've used hundreds, mainly on race cars where fasteners are going in and out all the time and the fastener themselves were loctited. (aluminium and mag castings and heavy handed mechanics don't mix )

Nice part about the tool is it's a reamer and a tap.If your not pulling the cylinder, just load the grooves with grease to catch the filings.

yup, that's the kit I used. Some of the others may be better, I don't know, that's the only one I've tried. Heat releases Loc-Tite, so this may not be the place to use it.

Looks like the flaired rim will tighten down on the jug.

I used a similar kit to repair a Yamaha FZR 600 plug thread, worked great.
