Can I Buff Out This Jug Or Will it Crash and Burn?

Here's a 2X closeup of a 254 cyl. Should I reuse it after buffing or am I asking for trouble. I am concerned about what looks like a crack to the left. It's on the exhaust port and the cyl. is shown upside down.
    Thanks, Gypo

I'm not sure I'm seeing what you're referring to as a crack?

Have a 201T that doesn't run like you expected? Need a new one that's already modded and ready to go? PM me for details.

Brad, I can see what appears to be a hairline crack to the left of the knick. I may have to get out my magnifying glass for a closer look.

I see what appears to be a crack going left to right on bottom of port Sir. Ends right at chip.

Considering that it's at the top John you would loose some compression even if it didn't present a reliability issue.
You could use something like a diamond bur to smooth things out but you would have to remove the piece that is starting to lift also.

Al, I also was wondering if there would be a compression loss and how much. Maybe it will just act like a makeshift finger port! lol
I also need to find out if that is actually a crack or not.

It actually looks like you have lost one side of that crack already going by the photo. With nothing too loose really, you could grind down level with what's already gone to see. No base gasket will bring some back I guess and even if the comps low, you might have enough to keep it running. It does run up the bore some though. You may run the risk of coating lifting further down the track.
    See how it cleans up.

Take a sharp 1/2" wood chisel and stick it down there where it looks like a crack. Try to pry the chip inward and see if the crack opens up. I'm betting it will. Right now you only need a cylinder. If you try to run it like that and a piece breaks off, you'll need a piston, cylinder, and maybe crank and cases also.

Unfortunately, the 154/254 cylinders are not shared with any other saws. Maybe someone here can spare one. I think Romeo has some 254 parts around. DO NOT try to use a 261/262 jug. I believe it bolts on, but there are differences in rod length, and deck height. I doubt it would run at all with a 262 jug, let alone run well.

Thanks, BD, that's a good idea, I'll try that. BRB.

I gouged and pryed with a chisel, but it won't break off.

I'm probably asking for trouble though. If anyone has a decent jug out there I can trade for a decent 064 jug.
Lot's of people have helped me here, so I don't mind helping them.

It could be a crack and if it is migrating toward the chunk that is already out..you will probably be needing another cylinder.

How are things going up there?... Have you struck it rich yet and you smiling all the way to the bank?....getting any salmon fishing or moose hunting in?

If I was younger I would head north just like you.

I can't tell if its a high spot or a crack? That gouge would be a concern I would think.

Al, it almost sounds like a forgone conclusion that I need a new jug, maybe the initial crash and burn was due to the crack crowding the cyl.
I'll still buff it out though in case I find another 254 not in so good of shape as this one.
    Thanks,
    John
