I was given a husqvarna 55 rancher that someone ran straight gas in. I replaced the piston and cylinder and now the saw will idle but I have no high end.It dies as soon as I pull the trigger. However I can sometimes get high reves when I turn it on its right side. The carb was rebuilt about a year ago but sat that long before the replacement of the new piston and cylinder.I also replaced the intake rubber tube and the impulse rubber seal.I am at a lost as what the problem could be. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've never run into this but I'll suggest setting the carb mixture. On several of my 55's, I've had to remove the limiting ears on the mixture adjustment screws.

Does it smoke? Did you check that the new cylinder gasket allowed pressure to the impulse? Is the choke operating alright? Is the throttle linkage hooked up correctly? How does the fuel line look? Could the fuel filter be clogged?

Welcome! And best of luck with it.

I have had the carb completely apart and soaked in carb cleaner.Linkage is good, choke works fine fuel line is good with new filter.I am going to check the base gasket next.It does not smoke. It starts right up and idles perfectly. When the trigger is pulled it dies immediately although sometimes when on its right side it runs fine. I was thinking it might be one of the crank seals. I think it is starving for gas but I am not sure or maybe a vacuum leak.

Looks like she is starving for gas. When you open the H needle ,do you feel a difference ?

No difference when I open the high speed screw.

You are saying she got a nice idle,so we can elminate air leaks probably.Check if your base gasket is installed correctly ,not blocking the impulse .You dont need to pull off the cyl, just remove carb and add some drops of oil in the pulse hole.Pull the cord and check if oil drops are sucked in and out.If yes, then gasket ok.You are left to recheck your carb, fuel line not pinched or cut, fuel filter in good condition, rubber boot well installed.

Could this be a pinched gas line?Sounds like the metering valve is not letting enough gas in, possibly due to a dried out diaphragm, or some foreign Debri floating about, Ken

Hummm Seymore.

You said you cleaned and disassembled the carb. You didn't say you put in a carb kit.

I heard it here -- 50% of all chainsaw problems can be fixed with a new carb kit. The rest can be fixed with a hammer!!!

Sey,
I had a similar problem with one of my Stihls. Check the muffle exhaust and see if there is a spark arrestor screen there. If it has one, and it is clogged, that could be a reason why you can't that puppy to sing.
Good luck.

sounds like you need to adjust your low speed, its too rich, you mention that when on its side you can maaasge it to get to the rev up, whats happening is you are getting too much fuel at idle and its puddling in the base at idle (when on its side you are gradually feeding it via the transfer ports). Lean up the low speed screw a little at a time till you have a crisp throttle response. Do a compression and vaccum/pressure test and let us know the result so we can help you narrow down the cause.

rancher 55 only idles

After checking the base gasket I found it to be on backwards plugging the inpulse hole. Boy do I feel stupid. I want to thank everyone for your input. This is a great forum.

Don’t feel stupid I did the same thing the first time I took apart my 51 and I that it was a carb problem but turned out to be the same thing I forgot to cut out the impulse slot in the gasket when I set the squish
