Thread: Stihl 036 Pro - compression release button?

I recently got a used 036 Pro that absolutely won't start if I push the decompression release. It seems to have good compression (seller said 155, but I couldn't verify that, however, it doesn't slide down when holding the starter rope).

If I make the mistake of pushing the button, I'm assured a dozen pulls at least. When I finally get lucky, it must fire once - can't hear any difference but at least the button pops out. Either that or I'm just yanking hard enough to make it pop. THEN - one or two pulls with the decomp closed and it starts up normally. Does this sound at all normal, or might there be a problem with something?

If I don't touch the button at all, the saw starts in a few pulls - usually choke it for a couple yanks until I hear a slight burble, then take off the choke and braaaAAAAAP! Idles and runs perfectly after that.

You may have a defective decomp. They can go bad. Most don't really need one on a 60cc saw. If you're fine without it, forget it and use the saw as is.

I definitely don't need it, but what could be bad about it? It's obviously opening when I push it, and seems to close at the right time, and I have to assume that it's staying closed while the saw is running. Seems functional to me. However, hard starting is a classic sign of low compression, which is what happens when you push the button. Should it starts easily with the button pressed? Maybe it's opening too far?

I never use the decomp on my 036 's . If I do sometimes it will a PITA to start and does just what you describe.

Check your compression with an accurate gauge.

I've two.

One still has the machine marks on the OEM piston as viewed through the exhaust, great compression, never had to tear it down

The other was a freebie w/scored piston. It just got a OEM piston and rings in the original cylinder that needed some clean up. It runs strong too, here is what I did:

As said above, you really don't need to use the decomp. on the smaller saws. I only use it on my 066 for cold starts.
