Thread: Springtime Muffler Mods......020T!!!

I have been wanting to open up the muffler on my Stihl 020T. I was reluctant because this requires tearing half of the saw apart. Well the other night was boring so I decided to go ahead with the project. While I was in there I replaced the impulse line and the started cord. Ken Dunn had stated in a past thread that the muffler on these saws were really restricted. After talking to Ken I found that that he was talking about the MS200T. Although this is an older 020T, it was not without it's restrictions too. I took off all of the interlacing fingers that are right at the exhaust port inside the muffler. I then drilled a 5/8 hole at the outlet. I like screens on my saws. I made up a bracket out of .080 aluminum to hold the screen in place. I haven't cut with the saw yet, but by the sound of the exhaust note and the better throttle response I am confident this was worth the time.

Yeah, I know Brian wouldn't think that this would be possible with the stable of saws that I have.

When your wife finds out how many saws you have and makes you get rid of some, keep me in mind. Right now I only have my 2 Dan Henry saws (346XP and Echo 340) as well as a stock Echo 340. I have been wanting to get a 372 or something but really do not need it much. All the guys I climb for have Stihl 044's and 046's so a big saw is usually available, but I prefer running my own saws.

It is definite that there will be some gains. As of how much I don't know yet. I have been working on other saws. As soon as I know I will post.

Nice clean job Rich, I also port match the muffler and the ‘towers” chop the top so the outlet is shorter thus improving cooling air flow and also remove the tail where the exhaust originally exited. The screen is vital to prevent crud from entering inside. 2 of my 200’s have been fully modified and they will handle a 16” bar buried in hard wood no problem, really fast saws!

Husky288xp and I worked for Geofore yesterday. I decided to use the 020T for a change. That muffler mod really worked good on the saw. It revs up a little quicker and picked up power throughout the whole rpm range. It was a hassle tearing half the saw down to do the mod but the end resutls were well worth it!

I'd say the mod worked well and looks great. Rich got to test it on walnut, elm, locust, hackberry and white pine yesterday from ground level to 60'+ in the trees. That pretty much runs the full range of soft wood to very hard wood and from ground level to up in the trees.
Rich & Steve, Thanks for the good job you did for me. We'll have to do this again. Maybe I can find a job that doesn't have 300' of fence up against the trees that has to be avoided.

Hey Silver who modded your 020t's for you. I wanted to know who takes one that saw. I am aware that Ken Dunn has done one with some good gains but who's the new guy for the 020t?

hey I climb with ms200t Iv'e had for about a year. I would like to mod it but i notice i can only back h screw out 3/4 turn so if i mod will it lean out as it curently runs with h ajustment backed all the way out.
