    New gas cans suck!

Needing to replace a couple of old style 5gal plastic gas cans, the new style(self venting)really suck. Are the old style with a vent still available?? If not, I'm thinking about drilling a small vent hole and use a screw with a neoprene backed washer.

I know I can't order any more of the old style, but if you can find a store that stocked up before they changed the law they can still sell the old style.

I use valve stems in mine. Just take out the core and use the little black cap to seal. Works great.

Now that is a great idea. Do you have any pics of steps in how you do it.

The cans are at the mill. Ill get pics tomorrow. Drill a hole a little smaller than the stem. I used a piece of wire run through the small hole into the jug. Out the big hole. Rap the wire around the stem and pull. A little lube helps. This should fix the vent problem. Did for me.

Ive been lucky to find a few good clean metal gas cans at garage sales. These things are sooooo much better than any plastic ones (valve or not).

Just make sure you check inside the tank as these things can, of course, rust if not properly stored/taken care of.

Hoarding my old plastic fuel containers

I have replaced some spout seals with sheet metal & 1/4" screws & nuts for
a grip to replace plastic ones that failed, will use these old containers as
    long as possible.
If the valve cap idea works, metal ones are available from auto parts stores.

One thing that I have noticed about the 2.5 gallon plastic cans with the new spouts. If you leave them outside (not even in the sun), they tend to swell as the ambient temperature rises. I release the pressure during the day and before I store them at night. Even so, when I go to get them in the morning they are all drawn in and deformed.

I wonder if I can still get the rubber vent buttons for the 2.5 gallon metal Eagle cans? I used to use them but the vents all went bad. I think I still have 2 or 3 of them left.

I got tired of the EPA jugs too. They would get really hot in the back of the truck on my black bed liner. So I upgraded to a 5 gal VP race jug. Big 3" opening and screw valve. The only problem I ran into is the tube in the winter. I use it to fill my big Toro snowblower, when its cold the tube doesnt like to bend. I got used to it by January. We also have 2 jugs from the 70s and 80s that work very well.

I use the Eagle safety can that Bailey's sells. They will self vent via a spring loaded fill cap and never over pressure like the CARB (California) cans will. I decant these into a piggyback can or gypo jugs.

The oregon enviro flow cans work quite well, much better than some of the other CARB/EPA cans I've used/owned. Baileys has them, they are a little more expensive than the others but worth it. Pull the black lever back to the pour position, tip the can into what your filling and press down on the green lever when what your filling is full let go of the green lever and it stops the flow

That style nozzle works even better if you modify it. Simply completely remove the part that has the slide knob (which you have to move to the "pour" position to use it).
When that part is removed, the big lever can be pushed as often as you like to start the flow.

I also cut off the part that prohibits removal of the nozzle from the can without pushing it to allow the collar to rotate.
