Thread: mac pm 610

I have a chance to buy a Mac pm 610 chainsaw fairly cheap as a second saw. Can anyone tell me about this saw? I have not seen it yet. How much would it be worth?

I heard that they started making them again, are there parts available for the older models?

In my opinion, this model series isn't much to write home about. They were made to sell at a fairly low price point, and have some inherent weaknesses because of that. They are kinda heavy and loud, and seem to be kinda thirsty for fuel. The chain auto oiler doesn't work very good, but there is a manual oiler if you're willing to train yourself to use it. Be careful not to drop the unit on its rear handle because it connects to the airbox housing which will break easily. I have one which came with McC .354 ga chain, which is oddball and hard to find...you'll want to check for this because you'll need a new sprocket and bar to change to 3/8" chain.

There are some folks that swear by this model and its similar sisters in the model series. I see them sell for nearly $100 on ebay, so there must be some popularity out there. I took one as payment on a $65 debt, and bought one at auction for less than $10.

As far as parts availability, that can be pretty spotty. Some deallers seem to be really sharp about tracking down parts, and some aren't. And some don't want to bother... I doubt if this model is being brought back, but an Asian investment group bought a lot of McC's mfg equipment and patents, trademarks, etc and is now producing some of the small saws. parts for these older units will be through older dealers and a few salvage companies that rounded up McC's old inventory at auction when they went bust a few years back.

This is,again ,just an opinion of the model 610,McCulloch.It Is,as has been stated,a rather heavy saw .At 3.7 cu.in,it has ample power for most firewood type cutting.The anti vib sysrem works,but there are better systems,on other makes of saws.I have personaly owned one for over 25 yrs,and have not had any serious issues with it.[ see my post under " collectors " thread ]Al

Nelly, If you buy the saw & need parts, just let me know. I've got 4 or 5 of these saws that I keep for parts for my running 610's. I use them everyday & they are loud & thirsty but they are really a rugged saw & very user friendly.

Loud, heavy, cheap. I have two resurected ones, a Mac and a Monkey Wards clone. Both were given to me not running. Here's a source for parts if you do buy:

this would be a second saw. I cut 4 to 6 cords per year of mostly smaller stuff. My main saw has a 16" bar and this one is set up for 20". I believe the sprocket was swapped out already. All the more i have to find out about this thing.

This is kind of unusual,in light of the recent conversation of the McCulloch PM 610. A fellow ,just last night ,dropped of this saw for me to look at.It seems this guy paid a $40.,up front fee to have a repair shop to repair the saw.The shop's reply is it could not be fixed.[ nonsense ].I just took off the Walbro carb,soaked the parts in WD 40,blew it out with compressed air,reassembled and tuned it.Runs great!Total time,less than 1/2 hour.I felt it noteworthy to include a pic. as this is one of the nicest ones I have seen in years. It's amazing what most people will give up on so easily. I've bought at least 5 Mac saws from Ebay people that have said that either the saws have no spark or will not run at all or even 1 Mac 1-62 a guy said was locked up!--had the wrong plug in it & was hitting the piston. I have never ( Knock On Wood) bought a Mac saw over Ebay that I could not get running with either some major cleaning or just a points adjustment or even 1 the air filter was clogged so bad it was choking itself & was in a flooded state. I guess that I'm lucky to like working on them & have the knowhow & ability to do so.

I'm not totally smart about saw work, just stubborn and I dont give up easily. usually I can get a machine goin again after about 6-24 hours of working on it. I've never to date had a single machine, husky homelite poulan or whatever that I couldnt get to run.
