    Stripped dawg threads.

    I overtightened one of the screws on my 395's inner dawg when I had it off a few weeks back. Now it seems the threads inside are completely stripped. This had happened on a used 385 I bought a few years back and my shop recommended a heli coil. That worked for about a year and then blew out entirely to the point that welding the aluminum was necessary which I didn't attempt. I just ran it with the outer dog and sadly ended up wrecking the whole saw a week or two later in a completely unrelated felling incident. Anyway, I seem to remember seeing a comment sometime ago laughing at the "usefulness" of heli coils in this application. Anybody got a different solution?

    There are a couple different brands of thread inserts available- Keenserts and Timeserts.

    If there is enough "meat" around the stripped hole, go to your local Fastenal store and get a 10 pack of EZ Lok inserts, similar to the threaded inserts you might use in wood but with machine screw threads on the O.D. A 6mm insert can be had in either inch (3/8-16) or 10mm threads on the O.D.

    So which insert would I want for a 385?

    The inner dog screws are M5x16 and mine are so stripped out the threads barely catch ...

    Is this a better solution than retapping to a bigger screw size?

    When at all possible I always prefer to retain the original hardware, so a insert is the best option in my opinion.

    What size threads do I want on OD ?

    Big enough to "self-tap" the stripped out hole...
