I kinda made this thread while thinking of you Tim!

Yes check it out and see whats on it. I'm betting unless its been changed that you will find a limited one on it. It makes sense that the larger two of that series would have been that way don't it?

Took it out and put it in some Oak today! It runs strong, is running 14400 and still has a little bit of 4 stroke to it.

Here it is in a Oak yoke, it runs pretty good I say.

Good thread Mark, those older Poulans really do run. Kinda hard to comprehend those rpm's, showing 14,400 on the tach is something like 240 sparks per second? (14,400 divided by 60 seconds) With 17k almost 300. Amazing...

Well guys I went to visit Mark this past weekend and I saw a most amazing transformation when we put one of these unlimited coils on the other PP475!!!

We attempted to tach the saw prior to the swap but it would just go to around 10,400-10,500 and the tach would go ape.
The saw ran strong and pulled well but it felt somewhat restricted.
I was starting to think it was in need of a good muffler mod.
We took the saw to the bench and 20 minutes later we had the new, unlimited coil installed and everything reassembled.
I couldn't believe my eyes OR ears when we fired that bad lad off.
The saw was like a totally different beast. He started leaning the carb up and it went smoothly to just under 17,000 RPMs before it stopped trying to four stroke!
We turned it back down to 16,500 and it started to switch back and fourth between four/two stroking.
It was four stroking pretty heavily at 15,000 but he richened it up to 14,400 to insure the new piston and ring had plenty of "insurance".
It now pulls like a Mack truck in HARD white oak!
The muffler didn't need to be opened up at all.
The transformation from "mild mannered Clark Kent" was indescribable.
It was a very good saw with the limited coil but I'm here to tell you that that old Poulan can now hold its own with anything in it's class!!!
I sure wish I had a few extra saw $$$ and a few less saws because THAT one would definitely be coming to Kentucky!!!

Mike, your right on with all that! This thing really runs now.

Just takes some determination to pull that starter rope.

I know it didn't look like that muffler had anything done to it by looking at that deflector on it, but it did indeed have some work done under it. That outlet hole is ver small stock so it got opened up some.

The rest of the insides of that muffler is pretty free flowing from the factory.

I told you you could have taken it back to Kentucky with you, all you had to do was leave the 9010 here.

Glad to see you got it running good Mark. They are very good saws. How does it stack up with you 575?

Seen the video of the Dolmar in the virgin thread and it looks impressive also Mike.

Good question and I can't tell you that yet. I have not had the chance to really run either one of these much since the coil change.

From what little I have run it though tells me it might be able to whip the 575 and thats saying alot to me.

You know from when I had the one 475 at Gregs, I wasn't too happy with it. I think thats all changed now.

I still don't know why they would have had these green 10,500 rpm coils on them though. I thought they might have been changed from stock but I just seen a used 475 coil on ebay for sale and it was green also.

Both of these saws had the H screws turned only about 1/4 turn out and is why they were burnt up, and I'm betting the same guy had them turned that way because of the false 4 stoke sound they were getting from that rev limited coil.

This is why I'm not a fan of the limited coils. Uneducated individuals are very good and ruining perfectly good equipment, they don't need help.

    Mark,
Just when I think my wish list is complete, individuals such as yourself show me a saw I knew nothing about. Next thing ya know I'm on the bay bidding on said saw. Good thing there are others reading your threads to outbid me! LOL

Mitch, don't worry if you get outbid. One of these 2 will be up for a re homing in the future.

I have not seen a 475 on there for sometime, I did see a 505 though...

Be warned though that the 505 call for the same coil part # as the 475 so that tells me that its limited as well.

I am looking into getting a decomp on one or maybe both of these in the very near future as I think they need it.

No the cylinders were fine, not hurt at all, so they just got new pistons.

Original 475 pistons are NLA though and that great saw guru Jacob related that a Stihl 064 piston could be made to work.

The 064 piston has about a .020" higher compression height on it so there building some serious compression now.

Other then the piston and a slight muffler mod there stock.

505 has a greeen coil on it.

    ....for now....

I have vacation in a few weeks. Wife kindly said that I should spend the week in my shop, and she'll go work extra to pay for christmas, etc. Now that's a woman. 505 will be getting torn down then for inspection, and 55 Husky coil installed. I would not want to try starting that one without the decomp, and it is all stock.
