    Homelite XL (UT-10655) 16

    Need some experienced help on this one please. Saw cuts small stuff well, go to cut bigger stuff and the chain will stop moving...

    I may have had the chain on a little too tight (still trying to learn that), but I can rotate it with a gloved hand.

    Took the saw apart and the clutch and drum appear to have gunk on them.





    I will clean these up (leaving the clutch on the saw) and see if that helps, but wanted some expert thoughts on this. Is the clutch shot, or is the drum worn out and a new drum will help? How can one tell?

    If you can move the chain by hand it's not too tight.

    Clean and dry (no oil/grease) will pull chain much better. 'Brake Kleen' is your friend. Just a little grease on needle bearing on reassembly.

    Keep in mind, this is a pretty wimpy little saw -- if you bury that 16" bar, you should keep a really light hand on it...

    16" bar on an XL sounds like a stretch...I have one w/ 14" and an opened-up muffler and it works hard on dry stuff--just used it yesterday. I would for sure clean the clutch, then check the chain for low depth guages or hooked cutters.

    Thanks for the replies. I need to pick up some brake cleaner, then I'll see how it works after. Will report back. Hoping it solves the issue - not sure why but I like this saw.

    I have several of them myself, I like them because back in the late 1980's when I started trimming trees for the power company we used these little saws for climbing saws...

    I love mine because it has lots of power for it's size.
    Maybe a 12" or 14" bar will be better for the bigger stuff, also remember to keep the chain sharp

    Possibly the 16" bar is on there just to extend your reach when trimming or limbing. Not something I enjoy doing with my 10-10.
