Having seen it mentioned in http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/160442.htm i decided to do some investigating. The IPLs aren't much help. I found a thread from last year on here that discussed them; http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/110574.htm
AS member bennn*e said that 029/039 had flippy caps after mid 98' from serial number 140 158 284. However, no evidence was really shown.

A number of the Stihl websites have a product history timeline, here is the Canada entry for 98';
" Special tank filler caps
New special-purpose filler caps for fuel and oil tanks are introduced for the first time on the model 029 and 039 chainsaws. These caps can now be opened and closed without requiring tools."
Here is the link;
STIHL Canada - Corporate

I know some people would interpret this to mean the orange caps but as far as i am aware only the fuel tank was fitted with an orange cap and the article clearly states that caps were for both fuel and oil tanks.e.g.

The uncertainty lies in the interchangability of parts and frankensaws so pictures alone cannot be taken as proof. Having searched on google i found several 029 supers that appeared to have flippy caps, e.g
1347446140

As i have said this is not proof, however, what intrigued me was the black circle at the centre of the flippy caps. All the so called 029Ss i was seeing with flippy caps seemed to have black centred ones.
So was this an early type of flippy cap?

Here is another 029S with the caps;

It was being sold and was stated as being year 2000 (note the silver sticker on the brake handle).

Unfortunately, none of the pictures were clear enough to be able to read the silver sticker to see the actual model. I thought the silver stickers arrived with the ms series.Then i found this;
Stihl 029 super - Kleingeräte, Werkzeuge & Maschinen
Here is one of the pictures;

You can see on the brake that it is a 2000 model and on the bottom left of the brake you can appear to see the letters 029S where the model number usually is. Well it is certainly not a ms290 etc as this is 5 characters and the sticker only shows 4 and you can see the model starts with a 0.

To conclude all the 029 supers i have found that have a green label on the brake handle have the orange fuel cap. It would appear that i have found examples of saws that are 029 supers that have a silver sticker on the brake handle and black centred flippy caps (the last example you can only see the top of the flippy cap, so we don't know the colour of the centre). I find it highly coincidental that the only examples of 029 supers i can find that have silver stickers also have flippy caps and the flippy caps are the same black centred ones.

Not exactly conclusive i know and before anyone asks... yes i was bored:hmm3grin2orange:

029 Flippy Caps

According to a 1998 bulletin in Media Cat, 029's and 039's above serial number 1 40 158 284 came with flippy caps. I don't ever remeber seeing one, but there a so many frankensaws, who knows. To confuse it even further, the IPL's for both the 029, 039 and the ms290, 310, 390, all show both flippy caps and screw in caps. There is also only one part number listed for a tank housing, but I assume the screw in cap tank housing subs up to the flippy cap housing and you just buy new caps.

Good work! :clap:

Now see if you can find an ivory-billed woodpecker, or the Loch Ness monster... :D

I noticed the saw on top was made in Germany. I'm wondering if the silver sticker is for Euro-market saws and the green sticker was for USA...?

Those black-dot flippies are crazy looking!

I love this kind of trivia!

029 s

Looks just like mine only cleaner and mine has a black switch. What is the difference between the black and red switches? It seems like maybe I saw an 026 with a red switch once also, but I can't remember for sure.

I had an 026 with the red switch. I have no idea what, if anything, the red switch signifies. Just a phase Stihl was going through, I guess.

Another apparent 029S with silver sticker and black centred flippy caps;

A 039 with one all black flippy cap and one modern one (probably replaced) again with silver sticker;

If i hadn't seen the other all black flippy caps i would have said this guy painted them, like he did the clutch cover. Appears to be silver sticker residue on brake handle.

So far i haven't found one made in USA.

Yeah as far as i am aware this series of european saws (with 3/8 chain) have gone from having yellow warning label(early 90s) through to yellow label with saw model and year data (late 90s) to a silver sticker with saw model, power and year data.
e.g.
167173d1294250553-european-sticker-jpg
not right series but just to illustrate.
The silver sticker i thought came in with the ms series saws in 2000 but apparently it is on some 029/039/029S series saws which may or may not be linked to them having flippy caps. I never realised US saws don't have a silver sticker. The IPL makes no reference to stickers for european saws only US ones.

All black flippy caps with silver sticker, made in Germany. I am wondering if none of the batch of serial numbers containing the flippy caps was ever asigned to Virginia Beach.
029 Supers with flippy caps seem to be common place on german Ebay, seen at least 5 in the last few weeks. Here is one;
