    Stihl 090G Super

    This particular saw was mentioned in another thread:

    The Stihl 090G 'Super' with a capacity of 137cc as opposed to the smaller std version of 106cc.

    Was this saw a factory machine, and if so - was it purely a test unit to see how it performed? Obviously many of the standard 090G saws were modified through the years by fitting the larger 137cc top end, but this still does not make them an original 'Super'. I guess that these are clone saws.

    Does anyone (ric) have any documentation on the 090G Super or photographs of these saws? I would be very interested to see the saw and its decals etc.

    If memory serves me right, they were a factory option. IIRC, the "Supers" chain driven reduction instead of the standard gear to gear. I could be way out in left feild though......

    I have soaked up every IPL, service manual I could there for a long while! The IPL's, manuals and literature is updated every so often and had slight changes, but never mention a "super" or 137cc top end.
    Collated them and compared them to what local dealers had and talked to several dealers who kept there micro charts.
    There was NEVER a mention of a FACTORY Super. I have had this discussion before, and there is no proof of a Stihl 090G "super" made by the factory.
    It is a simple swap of a handful of bolts and P/c, so it only seems logical option that some dealers were doing. Mortly in the west coast. But never from the factory as a Northeastern and Westcoast distributor told me.

    Oh ya, as for seeing them on eBay and around: Stickers come in all shapes and sizes!

    Several such saws were posted here along with a couple recent ebay auctions that showed a super sticker!
    That sticker was actually were a warning lable was on the rectangular indent on the air filter cover.

    BillG has had a Stihl saw with a similar sticker on it that said super and looked the part. I will let him give the specifics.

    A sticker is a sticker! But the 090G is more then able to handle the big top end and was a logical choice to slam on as stock it would be like a Mcculloch 795, compared to a 797G (a Leeha saw).

    Cheers Matt and Wiggs for the input.

    I thought as much but had to ask the question. If it was indeed a factory choice, one would assume that the aluminium labels or tags would have been made up accordingly. Stickers have a limited life whereas the tags are more resilient.

    With the 900/909/990/995G and the 3100G you need not modify! They have plenty of reserve just the way they are!

    I had to put this comment in to fly the big Homelite geardrive flag.

    Chris I have been wrong before! (and sure will be wrong again).
    I have collected every piece of info I could get my paws on and talked to every dealer or distributor I could about them!
    (as you know, even in your neck of the woods!)
    And have not come up with any such luck as a 090G "super" existing as a factory equipped saw.

    I think Ric was just trying to stir me up!
    It worked!! LOL!!!!

    And a big thanks to Ric for working with me on a handful of parts!!!!!!!

    CM my understanding is that 090 G could be ordered from the factory with the big top end but there was no additional badging but I suspect most would have been done localy.
