Thread: TIG welding question

    TIG welding question

    Just wondering if you guys have had any luck TIG welding on your saw? I have a 357xp and a 359 xp both need some welding done on em. The 357xp needs the small tab on the flywheel side that the chain brake handle mounts to welded back on and the 359 xp need the opposite mounting hole where the chain brake mounting screw goes is wobbled out and the threads are gone, so welding the hole up will allow me to go back and drill and retap it. Any suggestions?

    I have seen some work on saws in threads here. I am watching this thread. I have a 346 with a crank in the case under the FW. The crack doesn't extend into the CC, but I want it closed bf I go any further.

    Don't know if you already had a source for the welding, but in the drag racing community around Detroit this is the guy to see for welding stuff most other guys can't handle. I have never had any work done by him personally, but his reputation is tremendous.

    I wouldn't worry about it. All my saws have cranks in them

    BTW, I've seen some beautiful welding on chainsaws. I have no idea how it's done, but it certainly can be.

    You may already know this, but just in case and to share with others, make sure you drill a small hole on the ends of the cracks and then weld the crack and the holes back up. Cracks that are not drilled @ the end will re crack 95% of the time even after being welded.....

    To the OP, I rent shop space inside a welding shop from some friends of mine, they are constantly TIG welding lawn mowers and trimmers and chainsaws....along with rims, and other crazy things.

    It works just fine when done right.

    Proper TIG welding is accomplished by making sure the aluminum is constantly clean with multiple wire brush strokes with stainless steel brushes.....its not uncommon to brush 3 or 4 times inbetween layers of welding. The idea is to keep the calcium layer off the top of the aluminum
    Stihl MS310.....until CAD kicks in

    Dang, now I understand why your saws run so well and that last rebuild of mine wouldn't run at all.

    We are talking about welding magnesium......a totally different animal than AL.

    The very first step is to see if the saw part is Magnesium or Aluminum, very important. A simple test is dab some liquid solder flux on the part. If it turns black its Magnesium and needs to be TIG welded if it stays clear its Aluminum and can be TIG or MIG welded. The rods/wire are different for both metals and one won't work on the other. Just my thoughts of doing them for 30+ years...Bob

    Magnesium also burns with this bright white light if you don't know what you are doing.

    Gets very interesting to put it out. My uncle lost a saw like that when I was a kid.

    I 'taint Bob but these are the rods Bob helped me find awhile back:

    AZ92T60 magnesium tig welding rod

    I wish I could get them in a size smaller than 1/8" to match my electrode size but otherwise they're work fine. Don't bother trying to use aluminum tig filler rod because the weld will crack as it cools (ask me how I know).

    that is harris welco stuff

    here are links to the page, they are available in 1/16" and 3/32"
