    Ignorance is bliss

First its not about a saw but close. I get a call the other day from afreind that borrowed a demo saw (ts400) from his buddy. He asked what does it mean when the saw is smoking out of the exhaust whiteish blueish? I saud sounds like you mix is off as in too much oil. His response was that he yelled out to the guy running the saw "put some more gas the tank its got to much oil in it" I said you know there is a way that the gas should be mixed. I got back "i know, but a little wont kill it". alrite weel call me when you need it fixed and hang up. Today i stop down his place and there is the saw sitting there so i ask about it "i dont know it wont run know, can you fix it". Sure can but it might not be cheap. The first thing i do is check the gas and it turns out they mixed there oil not with gas but diesel. I told him i dont think it hurt anything just needed cleaned out and it just might run.

I just picked up a really nice looking TS700 demo saw off craigslist. I figured I could clean it up and resell it or use it a couple times and make some money off it.

Not sure about the diesel in the gas though. Good luck with that!

When the first generation Chevy 'Silverados' came out in '99 I spent a ton of hours working on one under warranty that ran terrible and smoked.....ended up that the local CFN cardlock had put diesel in the inground gas tank! Took a bit to clean the whole fuel system out....no problems though....and CFN paid since GM said no way!

I was talking to a salesman at the local Lowes store while browsing the "backroom" merchandise, the stuff that had been returned used and usually abused. I bought a like new $70 B&D GH1000 electric string trimmer that had thrown its spool cap for $10, got the replacement parts for free by emailing B&D.

Anyway....... There was two brand new Husqvarna riding mowers sitting in the shop, so I asked what was going on with them. I was told a man bought the first one, took it home and then called later and said it would not start. Of course Lowes told him to bring it back and swap it out. Man calls back again and says the replacement will not start either, so again Lowes said bring it back and swap it out. This time Lowes fueled the mower right at the store and drove it onto the mans trailer, the two previous mowers had not been ran before the man left. I walked over to the mowers and removed a gas cap and the smell hit you immediately, yep there was diesel in both mowers. The shop tech had already found the same thing and called the man, the tech said the feller got mad when he suggested that someone had filled the mowers with diesel. The man flew off cursing and said he was no idiot....... He later called back to apologize and said that his "dumass" son had put diesel in his gasoline can....... The "son" needed diesel and used the first can he found and the "dad" could not tell the difference in gasoline and diesel..... Who was the "dumass" again??

A Walmart in Sioux City had a reverse of this. The tanker put unleaded fuel in the diesel tank and it ruined multiple diesel trucks. Friend is service manager at Dodge and they saw several Cummings that had whole fuel systems replaced, major dollars in that incident. Just think of how many trucks were damaged before they caught it

Also my neighbors son put diesel in their John Deere LX188 by mistake. Brought it over to me. Drained everything and fuel bowl and off they went. No issues since.

Someone, who will remain nameless, once filled my Bro's gascan with diesel before a demonstration of a SP125C. Unfortunately, he caught on before raising a sweat.

I used to work for a truck rental company. We had customers put diesel fuel in the gas jobs once in a while. Most of the time it was caught soon enough to not cause a problem. One time the customer drove the truck til it stopped. That one had gotten so hot that it caught fire under hood and it had melted a hole in the cyl head and block between 2 cyls.

Diesel in a gas engine = Annoying
Gasoline in a Diesel = Catastrophic wallet failure

Also don't let a kid or anyone's wife fuel up your stuff, no matter how many Christmas cards you have to send them to make up for it.

I have seen Diesels get accidentally fueled with gasoline at a Mobil station (the handle on the pump was green for unleaded and black for Diesel years ago, bass ackwards!). They will run great until the gasoline purges the line of Diesel. Used to be ugly on IDI engines with Strandedyne or VP44 pumps, but on common rail you can total a truck if you aren't careful. It usually takes out the pump and the injectors. If you have a V8, that's a lot of dough to replace.
I always make it clear to people borrowing my stuff that you might get shot if you return it full of the wrong thing.

I think Diesel nozzles should be square, that way you get the idea quicker!

I just talked to a guy that got a bad tank of diesel at a station, Ended up costing roughly 14k to fix his fuel system parts and labor. These new trucks are pretty touchy about bad fuel, water or gas will cause major issues if it gets to the injector pump and injectors. Looking at at least 4k for a set of injectors these days.

If I remember right there is a very well known AS member (who I will not say) that mixes diesel in his gas along with other additives for his 2 stroke mix. As far as I remember they don't use a drop of 2 stroke oil in there mix either. He has NEVER had a failure because of this either. So it can be done.
