I opened up my stihl 036 and there is nothing inside of the muffler. I was assuming i would find a bunch of useless parts inside, but I did not.
My question is would it be beneficial to do a muffler mod in this particular instance?? I was reading about a 034 and the guy had the same situation as me and the people in that thread said not to do anything. I've been doing a lot of reading and people say that no more than 80% of the area of the exhaust opening to the muffler should be cut open so there is still backpressure for the 2 stroke to operate. (I have understanding of how a 2 stroke works) I'm kind of stuck, i see a LOT of people do muffler mods to their 036's and i was wondering if mine was one of these situations where my saw was made Pre-OSHA bullcrap.

Please let me know what you think and I appreciate you guys's input, I've been reading around on this site for over 2 years and finally signed up a while back and I have read and read and have learned more than i ever imagined about chainsaws :) Now if my wife would let me start collecting more saws I could join the CAD club

Same here, but I kept the screen:

Didn't take but a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the pics and advice.

I was wondering if i should make a secondary hole because i see a lot of those mods, and i think it looks cooler  , but i do want to go for performance over coolness, but if it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other.... Coolness does take a factor

I bought an 036 pro last month as well. I took off the front of the muffler and like the OP there was nothing inside mine either. It runs really good already. Will opening up the exhaust port make that much difference?

Does anyone have any input on this? Dual port over one bigger port?

Thanks!

If you like the cool factor so much, go dual port. That part is up to you. Making it breathe easier is the goal. Just think of how it will flow best when you do it, and a decent rule of thumb is 80% of ex port size.
