The compression will probably rise after you get it broke in. I love the 044's. I have a project now that I'm working on (my son and I actually). Can't wait to finish it up and put it in some wood! Thanks for posting the pics as well!![]()
Stihl 023, 025; MS200T, 026 pro, Stihl 044 - my personal favorite! Stihl MS460 Magnum - bring it ON!
Did I hear you say "STIHL" ? Sounds like music to my ears!
Congrats on your build![]()

Like what has been said many many times here on AS
Once you run a modified saw you'll never go back to a stock chain saw ever again !
Some people need thick skin
Those that declare that they (029/290) won't hold up bc of the lack of pro design
are merely ill-informed or are ignorant.
It doen't look good to anyone else I guess, except maybe for a few "brand fans".
Hahaha!!! The reason I answered more isn't cause I'm being a smart ass... It's cause I can't predict what it will be... There is a mathematic equation to figure it out, but you'd need to be able to measure the current volume of your combustion chamber vs what it would be - .020 of gasket thickness, bla bla bla..... Not worth it... I just take the gaskets out of anything I rebuild and check the squish... You're fine with 155... It will end up 160 or better and run great I'll bet!!!

Thats one clean 044,congrats on the rebuild. I finished mine up about the time you started yours, a total rebuild and had it ported out. I also have a stock ms440 about 5 years old. The 044 ported makes the stock 440 look and sound like a craftsman. I almost get 2 cuts to 1 stock saw cut, I had no idea that porting would improve that saw so much. I came in just over $350 It was a very fun project, Now im gonna send my new 260 in for a porting job. It should be a lot cheeper on this one,no rebuild just porting. I cant wait !!!

By removing the base gasket do u have to take any out of the squish band or do any porting. Please bare with me here am new to this. I am in the middle of a 044 build and learning as I go. I am just about to order a big bore kit and the parts I need but want to get the most out of the saw without doing any porting at this time. Ty for any help in advance.
Bushman I didn't notice but did u happen to put a dual port muffler on this. The way I understand is that will help also. You can find just the muffler cover on baileys under the 044 for I think around 40 or you can look under the 046 and get the whole muffler for 50.

Ok once again Ty for your help and your patience. But this may be another stupid question. By taking out the base gasket what are your over all gains. I realize it raises your compression but does it help anything else without porting.
By removing the base gasket, you eliminate ~ .020 of the squish band space, thrusting that much more fuel and air into the combustion chamber... The percentage of gain depends on the original port timing of the saw model you have... The torque curve should rise though, in theory...

Ok I think I'm understanding this now. To figure out ur port timing that is where u guys use the degree wheel and then go from there for your porting needs.
