Question New to Arboristsite, question about MS362 break in fuel

    Hello gentlemen,

I've just joined this forum after many weeks of reading up on great input for saws, maintenance and general tomfoolery

I've just purchased a Stihl MS362 and ran about 5 tanks of gas through it yesterday. Because I'd heard/read that these saws take a while to wake up or break in, I used the Stihl MotoMix fuel during the time I ran the saw yesterday. Seems like this stuff is great except it's expensive and seems to make the saw run hotter in my opinion. Anyone else encountered this? I don't want to improperly break in this new saw with the motomix which might be making it run hotter than normal 50:1 mix. What do you all think?

    Thanks!

Its not the fuel....the carb is probably set too lean......
I'd almost be willing to bet one of my saws on that

Hey hold on a minute now, regarding that pic with the Stihl, that's no ordinary Stihl. That's "Christine", and she has quite the attitude. spike60

That was one of my worries based on some of the previous threads I've read here. So...take it to the dealer and have them adjust it? Or how do I know the proper turn on the carb screw to make it tuned properly to do it myself?

I would also look at the carb setting first, and would set it a tad rich for run-in. The dealer should have checked the settings at the point of sale btw, but maybe he used a different fuel mix to do it?

recomending a set rpm is not the correct way of doing it. doesn't matter what rpm it's at, it's weather it's rich enough.

After two trips to two different stihl shops, I've learned...not too much actually. First shop here where I live told me that "you don't want to mess with the high/low carb. screws" because it could mean "seriously messing up the saw" which is something new to me--hell, the instruction manual explains it to some degree that it is necessary sometimes. The second shop (where I bought the saw) "tuned" the saw by ear. The technician told me that the strato saws tend to operate like they run more lean and not to worry about how this effects break in and saw performance.

Bottom line is that the saw cuts like a demon and seems fine now. I am frustrated at the different responses and how nobody at the shops seems to know what I'm talking about. Maybe it's me...

Most dealers are useless. Put the small orange screwdriver in the H adjustment hole and turn it as far counterclockwise as it will go. If it doesn't turn the limiter on the needle will need t be trimmed, on the 362 that involves removing the carb. Most dealers will not do this because it's a bit of a PITA and they don't know any better or don't care if the saws running lean. The 362 I had was far too lean from the factory, same with most epa saws.
