I've got them and you want them.

Two new to me saws.A Homelite Ranger and Craftsman C944 .

Yeah,I know but what can I say.I was on the way to the bike shop to pick up a new sprocket for the YZ and saw them sticking out of a wheelbarrow at a yard sale so picked them up for not much $$.Very little time on either as they look almost brand new and both run.
What I was wondering was, what exactly are they?I didn't know the Homelite name was still out there but assume it's been picked up by a Chinese company.I have no clue at all what company makes this model craftsman(though it looks awful Poulan-ish) or where I might find info on either.
    Any help is much appreciated,thanks.

Nobody eh?Ok,I flailed around a little and came up with some info for anyone interested. The Craftsman is,as expected,a Poulan.
The Homelite is not necessarily a Ryobi though some of their products cross over as they are owned by the same company,TechTronic Industries. http://www.ttigroup.com/assets/pdf/p...ng/p020902.pdf

From a usage point of view for junker saws, the homelite feels very smooth and tight with low noise and little vibration-though not a real powerhouse by any means. It does look like a kids toy with all the bright yellow and red plastic though.
The craftsman, despite running well, feels and sounds sort of like a can of rocks on a paint shaker in comparison.Enough so you almost want to hold it away from you for fear the rod flies out through the side and embeds itself in your goodies
On the upside, the next time a friend stops in and wants to borrow a saw for the weekend, they'll get the choice of one of these

    What no pics??

Check the chain on that poulan, it could run rough and vibrate more in the cut if the chain is boogered up bad.

My advice is to move the Homelite as soon as possible. I have a 33cc Bandit that is on its' third coil.

Yeah, they just die for no reason.

Never heard of a Craftsman C944. What is the model number? If it's a Poulan it should begin with 358.xxxxxx.

That's probably good advice to dump the Ranger and I did so this morning-to a guy at work. The price? $0.00,but a promise that he'll find me two old running or non running jred, husk, partner, stihl etc for trade-and he will-a good trade imo.
One thing I did like about it though was the bar wrench that stayed in the recess in the lower part of the handle-cool idea-they all should be that way.
I'm likely exaggerating a bit on the roughness of the craftsman but it does seem like a machine with an out of balance crank when just revving it up-not in a cut.
It has some sort of queer chain with "loops" between the cutters. It would appear that if you cut the rakers away,it wouldn't make any difference as the loops would do the same thing.
    The serial # is C944.41950

That part number doesn't cross to anything I've ever seen, but I've got the same basic Craftsman saw - essentially the A/V version of the Wild Thing, equivalent to a number of Poulan Pro saws. Mine is 42cc but that one may be smaller. They are generally quite smooth, so there may be something wrong.

Maybe so,I haven't had time to look into it yet.I was going to ck and see if one of my husky bars and/or chains would fit it so I had a quick look this am before heading to work.I haven't pulled the chain off yet to ck the sprocket but the bar has the queerest tensioning set up-it's in the bar itself-basically a rack and pinion set up made into the bar that pushes on the front bar stud when you turn the recessed pinion in the bar with a screwdriver. These saws are new to me so maybe this is normal?Weird.......
    BTW,this one is a 40 cc.

My S.I.L. has one like that. Won't stay where you set it. Gets loose in three minutes of run time. Get the screw and dog and change the clutch cover over to the regular setup.

A couple pics. The adjuster set up and a shot of the cover.Interestingly, the cover has the hole and groove for a standard screw type and tit in the bar hole adjuster-which it will get shortly-if i decide it's worth a new bar and chain.I think the chain pitch is different from my Jred/Husky or Stihl stuff by looks but I'll ck into it more closely. Also a shot of the weird "loop" chain. It's a little fuzzy but you get the idea.

That appears to be an Intenz bar, though it's a bit hard to see - I've never used one although I did pick up a spare 20" at TSC on clearance for $5! They do work as far as I know.

That chain can be disposed of, unless you want to save it for a nasty stump. Those saws all use Oregon 91-series chain, which is 3/8" Lo-Pro, 0.050" chain, but that loop is the really junky skip chain that only seems to ship on saws from the factory. The replacement loops you can get anywhere at least have all the cutters, and from what I've seen they don't seem to have the shark fin bumper ties anymore, but ramped drive links instead. You can buy non-safety versions of Oregon or Woodland Pro at Bailey's.

Put a decent loop of chain on it, maybe do a muffler mod ( Muffler Mod for 42cc Craftsman ), tune it and give it a try. You may find it to be a decent saw.

i have a poulan pro 38cc 220 with that exact set up, i HATE IT. it is hard to tension the chain and it loosens up real easy. i picked it up for free and it actaully runs well and cuts light stuff decently with a non safety chain.

i have dropped the chain off the bar a bunch of times. if the saw gets piched at all and i pull it out, it will take all the tension out of the chain and it jumps right off. i want to get another side cover or modify it but refuse to drop any coin on the saw.
    Shindaiwa 500- My main saw

    Homelite EZ - running
Homelite ZIP - just for looks

and a 27Ton Troy built log splitter to make smaller sticks with!
