On the Mcculloch D-44 does the choke lock in or do you have to held it in when you pull on the recoil?

You hold it down. Rear handle in LEFT hand, saw resting over a log, left thumb pushing down on the choke and left trigger finger giving it about 1/2 throttle. Pull BACKWARDS (NOT up) with your right hand while pushing the saw forward with your left....

Don't tune old saws with a tach!
Tune the H side so that it burbles (four strokes) at WOT unloaded and just cleans up when under load. When you lift cutting pressure, the saw should revert to four stroking.

Read the above, follow the directions, and repeat as often as necessary until the saw is running...

It has worked for many decades, well before the Lace Panty Party got it's start.

    A quote from 2dogs

"I firmly believe in the philosophy that safety is the number one priority in the woods. Having said that I feel that safety starts with the proper mindset and is followed closely, very closely, by the proper skillset. I think there is a tendency to offset poor skills by buying more safety gear."
"Amateurs should stay away from big saws in big wood."
