just got a new saw delivered last week thanks to the awesome girlfriend...problem with it tho, starts right up and runs good for about 15 minutes and then dies and wont restart for anything till the saw sits for an hour or two. basically when trying to start it sounds like it does when it first tries to start while being choked...any ideas on this? figured this saw would do okay since im just using it for firewood cutting but its really making me mad.

Open the gas tank when it begins bogging down. If you hear a hissing and it runs great again, then the tank vent might be clogged. Schould be a easy fix. If the saw is new as you say bring it back to the store for a waranty repair.

    Good luck,

Figure out if it is drawing a vacuum or building pressure in the tank. If it's drawing a vacuum then the tank vent is not working. If the tank has pressure then maybe there is some junk in the carb inlet needle that is preventing it from closing, and then the normal pressure that can build up (heat, etc.) is blowing fuel past the needle and flooding it.

What does it do right before it croaks and won't restart? And what kind and size of wood are you cutting and how hard are you pushing it and does it have that cheap chain on it?

It's a brand new saw, push it too hard before it is properly broken in and it will overheat. Cut with a dull chain in beefy hardwood, same thing. Do it more than a few times (even that might be too much) and you'll trash the piston and cylinder. Over heating will transfer heat to the fuel tank, cause a pressure buildup. Your H and L carb adjustment screws, where are they set at? How many turns out from a gentle full seat in? It could very well be a smidgen too lean, they both might need to be turned out (richer) just an eeny more, especially the H screw.

It should not matter if it was bought online or not as a long as you have a reciept for it to show when it was bought. Go to Poulan Pro.com and click on the service locator at the top of the page. Put in the town that you live in and you will find places to take it for service. You have a 2 year warranty so use it. Poulan is pretty good in that regard.

Much better then taking advice from internet fourums on a new piece of equipment.

Personally it sounds like you have a electronic ign module/coil giveing problems but that is just a guess not seeing it personally.

Come back please and let us know how it works out. Yours is the first one I have heard of having any trouble with.

Well at least its getting taken care of one way or another but I have to say I feel there is more to the story that I would like to know about.

You said you called Poulan, why did they not take on the warranty? What was there reasoning. Did the shop give any reason to you why the cyl scored?

Was it a refurbished saw not a new one? Was it because Amazon was not a authorised Poulan retailer? Something is up there.

If that saw was new and bought online from say, Sears or Tractor Supply the original warranty would have to be honered I would think.

If you don't cut much, just get that canned pre mix fuel. They sell 40 or 50:1, maybe use the 40 for breakin (or forever). It's expensive, but very good fuel and lasts. And the cans themselves are great for pouring into the saw and easy to shake up first.

You can double check the factory setting on the H needle, a little rich is a lot better than a little lean. If in doubt, it won't cost much at all to take it to a dealer for first tune, then cut some tanks, then take it back and get it retuned.

Excellent recomendation! The premix has I think a shelf life of 5 years so for little use it should be ideal.

Just out of curiosity, how much and what kind of 2 cycle oil did you mix in with your gas? I'm glad Amazon stood behind the product. Like Mark said, haven't really heard of 5020s giving any troubles yet.....but then again, I'm no saw pro either.
