    Stihl 009

hey, looking into buying a top handled saw and cant afford a 201T just yet and cant find used 200T. A guy has a 009 for sale, strange lookin outfit. has anyone ever owned one or know how they run? can you use it with one hand? thanks.

It is not a substitute for a MS200T and isn't really going to work well as a climbing saw. I have one and like it but it isn't really a top handle in the "one handed" sense.

There are other options out there if you need to do some climbing and cutting. Echo 3400, Stihl 192, etc that cost less than the 200T. We use a Stihl 019T and it works fine for the occasional use we give it.

The 009 came in two engine sizes -- the larger being 2.5 cubic inches. They do alright as a top handle with 12" bar, not so good with 16" bar. Mine have served me well. The full-time oil pump will really oil the place up after any time spent idling.

Look at a photo of the 009L and then look at a photo of a MS200T, echo 3400, MS192, etc and you will see what I mean by the 009L not being a top handle in the true sense. The 009L as I mentioned before is a good saw and very powerful for its size but I wouldn't climb with it when there are so many better options. The 009L would be good for trimming brush for the chipper and I also like it for construction use. (cutting fence posts, wood planks, etc.) Of course the saw "could" be used in a tree as many a MS440 has made that ride but you probably should just find a true top handle arborist saw.

why do you want a top-handled saw? The 009 is heavy for a "climbing saw", plus it's not really well-suited for this role, as others have pointed out.

old-school design (we're talking 70's here) but it is pretty bullet-proof. you could throw it out of a tree and it would be fine...

The 192 isn't a "pro" saw but it does well. Running 200s go for 300-400 on the bay if you're patient. Don't know what a new 192 goes for but I'd rather have a good used 200 than a new 192.

Or you might consider an old 020T.

Or a new Redmax with a muffler mod (search for brad's (blsnelling) posts on this).
