    Cheap saw quick...which one

    hey everybody, so I have a good little 015 av that is good for more than it should be used for but my cabin up in the mountains above Boise was hit with some real wind and I have some monsters to cut up. Only here for a few more days and $$ are always tight..checked Craigs list for a good saw..nothing. Going to hit Lowes and HD for used this morning; if nothing then it will be the:

    Poulan Pro 50cc 2-Cycle 20" Gas Chain Saw
    or
    Remington 55cc 2-Cycle 20" Gas Chain Saw

    Cheap and warranty if needed...what say you??

    I acquired one of those little 20" polans. It has decent power but if you are cutting anything big or hard it will show its weaknesses. I think before I would buy either one of those I would search craigslist until the absolute last minute and if nothing comes up head over to the depot and get the biggest husky they got. I'm new to the forum and this is only my personal opinion though.

    They are probably both about the same. The Poulan Pro might be a little easier to get parts for. Make sure you know how to sharpen a chain and keep it sharp. Those little saws don't have alot of extra power.

    Pick up a couple of those plastic wedges so you don't pinch the bar in the cut as well.

    are there no saw shops in Boise?...i would take a used stihl, husky,or j-red over the cheap huskys lowes or HD sells...just a thought

    I will "echo" the others. Look for used and if not probably an echo. Get it from a local dealer because they are so lean outta the box that you may cook it at camp.Echo is nicer than the home owner huskies and miles ahead of the poulan.

    You may have to spend a bit more than you thought but you will have a solid saw on your hands. Let us know what you do. And keep it sharp. Russ

    found a Husqvarna 36 Chainsaw. Only a 16" bar so would take extra work on some of the bigger stuff. Only a 36cc motor as well...would that be better? about the same price...

    I'm sure either would do what you want. The Poulan is a newer design with a strato engine, the Remington is an older McCulloch design which appears to have some nice features.and probably has some grunt. I would like to have either one. The Poulan is probably cheaper.

    Sounds like maybe a smaller motor and bar and a name brand might be the better bet. I do not think I can go much smaller than a 18" bar...what is the smallest cc? These trees are softer wood (up in the pines) but about 2 foot diameter...Thanks for all the replies...I'm learnin' wedges, chain file etc....

    i would try to find something in the 50cc range with a 18" to tackle the stuff you are describing (husky 350 stihl 026 ect)...IMHO

    A member modifiedmark did a write up on Poulan Pro 5020. LINK--> Bought a new Poulan Pro 5020 to see what there about This saw is 50cc.


    What ever you get be sure to read on tuning it (many threads on this forum) so it's not running lean! Running a saw lean is just as bad as running them without oil in the fuel, just a slower death. A cheep saw will last a long time if tuned and not abused. Believe it or not, many saws are adjusted lean out of the box to keep the EPA 'happy'.

    Also, keep the chain sharp! A dull chain just causes more load on the saw and generates more heat. When the chips get smaller and the cutting speed slows, sharpen the chain then!!! Don't wait until it's throwing powder! If you touch dirt or rocks sharpen then!

    If you're tuned into how the saw is running and cutting, it'll last you a long time!

    There is no "real" saw dealer in Boise anymore. D & B has the best selection of homeowner saws, and good prices. Not all D & B stores carry Stihl. I would look at a Husky or Stihl in the $300 dollar range, or even a Stihl 290 or Husky 455 for $400, and sell it once the trees are cut. Probably get $100 less than you paid.
