What is the final diagnoses??? Sounds like the chain was too tight and getting too hot, bogging your saw down like it was in wood when you let off throttle. I would be careful not to wide open throttle (WOT) for too long if it is not running right.

Smoke makes a lot of equipment run right, I have an old computer that let some smoke out and now it does not work anymore, try to keep the smoke in.

All you needed to do is open up the L needle an 1/8 of a turn. On top of that the 346's do this when they are cold and even more so with a fresh cylinder. The smoke on the bar means. Not enough oil, or the chain is too tight, in both cases you're overheating the bar and chain.

Yup, the 346 is exceptionally cold natured when first started. But, after that, watch out!!!

Dealers work on stock saws. Stock saws are tuned to a set RPM with a tach. All that goes out the window on a modded saw. Few dealers would even touch a modded saw, and even fewer probably know how to tune by ear. It's just not what they do.

It'll be fine, just leaving a little performance on the table with a rich tune.

Mine wasn't cold natured, not was the 2153 - i guess it depends on the carb settings?

    Dear Diary,

My saw is still in at the shop. They didn't call today b/c they are backed up (the saw guy was off on vacation last week). I was expecting this to be the case, but deep down inside, I had a glimmer of hope that they would get to it. They day has come and gone. I'm sad. I have 3 different wood piles right now that need that saw. 1 is a pile of maple and locust big dead logs. 2 is a pile of maple and locust live logs, 3 is a big dead oak. They all need bucked. I will keep my spirits up for tomorrow, that they will find the issue with the carb, and fix it.

Like what has been said many many times here on AS
Once you run a modified saw you'll never go back to a stock chain saw ever again !

    Some people need thick skin

Those that declare that they (029/290) won't hold up bc of the lack of pro design
are merely ill-informed or are ignorant.

It doen't look good to anyone else I guess, except maybe for a few "brand fans".
