    Stihl 029 Super or MS311

I need a saw for occasional use and am considering two locally. One is a Stihl Super 029 (1999?) "used 6 times" for $175 and the other is a Stihl MS311 (2011) 20"bar 3/8 chain "like new, only ran 2 tanks of fuel" for $400. Any suggestions?

Look at them both, look very close. The " only two tanks of gas" are not usually not so.

$400 is about what a really nice ms311 goes for, and $175 is not bad for a clean 029 super.

A lot of people on here are going to tell you to not buy either, but for an occasional use saw they are fine.

If you get the 029 cheap enough you can order a 039 cylinder from baileys for around $100.

029 super is a pretty good runner if it is healthy. Air filtration and anti-vibe is better on the 311, but I doubt it is $250 better.

If those saws are what they say they are, the 029 would be the better choice because even with a good amount of additional usage, you could get all your money back. They are popular around here and sell for more than that. The 029 is not the lightest, fastest saw on the block but it will cut wood year after year after year. A lightly used one for that price would be a good find.

Caveat: People's interpretation of saw condition varies wildly. Trust but verify.

Actually, scratch the trust, just verify...

Stihl bars hold their paint very well. Saws that have seen as little use as the two you mentioned should have nearly 100% of their paint intact. Especially the one that only had "two tanks" of fuel through it. Ummm, were those saw tanks of fuel or two five gallon cans??

And the 029 that was used six times, was that "I cut my winter's wood for six winters?"

hmmm... I'd say grab the 029 super. Take an 8mm socket with and pull the muffler to check the cylinder for wear. If there is verticle scoring you're limited on the life of the unit. But if it is scored I'd offer less and throw a good aftermarket 039/390 top end on ($90 tops) and not look back.

PS: all it takes to swap cylinder and piston is a torx 27, 8mm socket, and some yamabond. Takes me less than 2 hrs start to finish and ready to run the next day.

My personal best is running saw to crankshaft in my hand in 27 minutes. While I could likely build one up in less than 1.5 hours, it would take a bit longer to get everything cleaned up and ready.

    Neither.

I would rather have all of the personal satisfaction, enjoyment, entertainment, and (small amount) of money that I have gained by working on these over the years.

Keep on beating the pro-saw drum. I'll be out in the real world working on regular saws for real folks just doing their thing. (Unless I have to go to MY real job....)

Totally different saws - the 029 is a plastic cased clamshell design......

Of the two, I'd go for the 029 Super - like someone else mentioned, even more used ones go for more than that - and the 311 only being literally 2.5ccs bigger isn't worth 250$ more. The 311 was always one of the models I am really surprised they even bother making/marketing/etc because it is so close to so many others. Get the 029 Super, do a quick muffler mod to wake it up and you'll have a great saw.
