Best saw = the one that starts

I was just sitting in traffic behind an accident less than 20 minutes ago. There was a passenger trapped in a car and there was a small sapling in the way of the door. One of the firemen pulled out their rescue saw, it appeared to be a Husky 372. As he tried to start it without any luck, a homeowner ran inside and grabbed his MS 290 started it and handed it to the fireman who promptly cut down the tree. IT seemed that everyone was alright in the accident. As I drove off I couldn't help thinking about what crappy power to weight ratio that damn farmboss had as it cleared the way for the rescue crew. I could tell by the look on the fireman's face that he was having a hard time holding up that heavy heavy saw.

It sounds like the fireman needs some training on the starting procedure. I thought FD's started their saws daily?? My ported 372 can sit for weeks and will start on the 5-7 pull every time. It just needs enough pulls to prime the carb. Rescue saws might be a good argument for primer bulbs. I finished a 346 last week, and it has been sitting on the bench and getting started when I walk in to the shop. I hit the primer and it will start on the second pull everytime.
346's 357's 359's 372's for sale- PM me if you are looking

I've worked on equipment for various fire departments, and they go weeks or months without running them.

They are abuse and neglect their equipment worse than landscapers.

    Not surprised it didn't start.

I like Husky and Stihl equally. I just thought the real world situation that I had a front row seat for was pretty funny in the context of the classic Pro vs Homeowner and Stihl vs Husky debate. The 372 is loved by AS, the 290 is hated by AS, but in the real world it wasn't the saw that made the difference, but the fuel, the operator and the maintenance.

As a fireman I know all about this. We make it a habit to start saws, fans, cutters, etc every 2 weeks to make sure they start and run. Usually its the same 4 guys that do everything so when the time comes to actually use it, the dusty fireman dont have a clue how to start it...

At my dept we use the Echo QV-8000 for our "rescue" saws. Have probably 8 of them on various apparatus around the city. We start them every morning along wth our positive pressure fans, our stihl ts-400's, and our small honda powered hydraulic units. Generally speaking the saw(s) on the engine i am stationed with will start on the second pull. It can be frustrating(and humorous) watching a newb trying to start one for the first time though. Don't want to experience the embarrasment and frustration of a saw not starting on a scene.

There's a fire dept. right across the street from the shop. Every morning I hear them fire up the cutoffs and rescue saws. Just as soon as the saw will do it they hold it right on the stutter box for 10-15 seconds straight and shut 'em off. The guys get bored over here. They run the ladder all the way out twice a week. They wash everything daily. Ambulances, ladder truck, tank truck, personal cars..... They burn more gas doing actual maintenance than they do when they need the equipment

One pull or first pull? Every one of mine will start with one pull, but I have never seen a saw that will start on the first pull unless it is warm.

Cold. One pull on full choke, when it pops you flip it to partial, continues running blip throttle and it continues running. Just one pull. Not a credit to me. I never really tuned it, just that good of a saw.

I got my wife to video this last winter, cause she happened to come by where I was working. I got a little anxious, and I think it did take five pulls, I was thinking-What the #%^&! Then I realized It was running on fumes. Five pulls on fumes, sittin' two weeks and 15 degrees out. It's a classic. Otherwise often a single pull will light her up. That's the beauty of the saws that predate all this decompression garbage. She's an absolute golden classic from the motherland. I had one before this one from West Germany that behaved just as well.
