I've been hitting the pawnshops again and found some nice looking Stihls. The girl even let me try one but I couldn't get it to start.

On the side there's the ports for gas/oil mixture and chainsaw oil. On the back there's a three-position switch on the lefthand side. It appears to be off, run and high-idle. You have to hold down the trigger to get it to the bottom position.

My problem is, on the back of the hump on top, there's a dial that goes from 45 degrees left to 45 degrees right. I'm assuming that's choke, but I don't know where to set it for starting position.

I also couldn't find a primer pump.

OK, so how do I start the ???? thing?

Stihls don't have a primer pump.

Squeeze the throttle and lock it in position, and then put the switch in the bottom position. That position should be the choke position on that particular switch. It's like that on my 028. Then start pullin'. When the saw comes to life, you let it warm up a tad, and then move the switch to the middle position or "RUN". all the way up is "OFF".

Not tryin' to be a smart-as s here, but are you sure the saw is an 043???

you sure thats not an 034 your looking at? there is no 043 i am aware of.
the dial on back sounds to me like the air cleaner cover knob. turn that knob the cover comes off..

That's what I thought Ben.

Does the 034 have the same start lever as the 028? Don't wanna give the guy bogus dope here. Never had the pleasure to use an 034, but the switch he describes is just like the one on my WoodBoss.

I agree with the two of you above. The knob on the back sounds just the like what's found on the 026/034/036 air filter cover, to me at least. I also have not worked with an 034, but handled my buddy's 036 this past weekend, and it's lever was set up like an 026's.

I could be wrong, I usually am.

Yes, the 034 has the master control lever, and it should operate the same as any other Stihl master control lever. Down to the bottom position is full choke, next up is fast idle, then run then stop is full up. As has been mentioned, full choke til it pops, then fast idle til it starts, blip the throttle to take it off fast idle to run and it should be running. If not, it has problems, they may be major, or more likely minor tuning issues or a dirty plug or filter.

That's entirely possible.

That makes sense too. The thing it was attached to seemed loose.
