    Stihl 024 AVS Mix Info

Hi guys, I'm new here. This is one great board with lots of info, very useful for a beginner.

I just bought a used 024 AVS (125 $ CDN and it works great!!) and was wondering about the mix. The previous owner didn't give me any documents so I look on the Stihl Web site. It says to mix Stihl oil 25:1 and any other oil 50:1. Does anyone knows why there's such a big difference? Since the Stihl oil is designed for my saw, I find it strange that I have to use twice as much. I use 40:1 with non-Stihl oil for my leaf blower, can I use the same for the saw?

Any general info on this model is also greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome fred20!
There's been a lot of debate about fuel mix on this board.Check out the thread "Fuel Oil Ratio".It may contain some helpful information for you.I use a 50:1 mix with premium fuel in my new Stihl saws and blower, don't like several containers of gas mix with differing ratios in the garage, and use the fuel within a month.

    Hey Fred!
I agree here, although I think you got your numbers backwards.

I personally like Stihl 2-cycle oil and use the 50-1 mix with premium gas in all my 2-cycle stuff. Any brand, doesn't matter. Do you honestly think that the local repair shop has 10-15 different cans of mix gas for different brands? No, they use a high-quality brand of 50-1 air-cooled 2-cycle for everything. Stihl, Husky or Echo oils are my recommendations.
The 25-1 recommendation by Stihl for other brands of oil is a 'CYA' thing (cover your a**). Bargain basement oils from K-mart or the local Ace Hardware don't have the additives of the higher quality oils.

Specifically...any world marketed saw will usueally say 25 to 1 with other oils...that spec is for third world contries where no 2 cycle mix is avail...it does NOT mean use 25 :1 2 cycle mix oil!!
that is for the places that are using motor oil...like 30wt !

A few years ago a friend and I were out cutting some firewood,he was using his dad's old 032...It ran like crap,so we tuned it up.So when he gives it back to his dad he gets a call..."what did you do to my saw? it runs like crap!" turns out he ran 30wt,that saw ran for years and years on 30wt,but I wouldn't recommend it.

024 is a good little saw and you got a good deal. 40-1 with any quality oil should be fine...make sure it's tuned properly rich for that mix(if it's tuned for 50-1 it may run slightly lean on thicker 40-1 gas) and go for it.

    That 30wt stuff,I like that!
You can save lots of money on bar oil too. When you change your oil on the BMW or Lexus, just strain it thru a cotton cloth, and reuse it for bar oil.Great way to dispose of old motor oil hehehehahahahehehe.......does the EPA read these posts

Thumbs down Are you kidding me!

Using old motor oil will significantly reduce the life of your bar, sproket and chain. If you don't know better maybe you should not be handling a chainsaw. You might hurt yourself.

    You got it backwards...

Run Stihl oil @ 50:1 and other oils with more oil in the mix.

You can safely run modern quality mix oils at 50:1 in any saw.

...and to the cat usin' "strained" waste oil for bar oil... good luck with that. I bet your saw and your pant legs are stained black... It will greatly reduce the life of the oil pump, and bars and chains...

All used crankcase oil has raw gasoline in it... so it's basically wokin' as a solvent.
