Thread: mcculloch PM 605

hello everybody! i'm new here so i beg forgiveness in advance for scewing up. now my question , i bought the above saw for cheap last year and it ran fine this year i pull it out to get working and it won't start for the life of me.i ran it out of gas when i put it up and filled it with clean gas this year, i checked for spark by holding the wire and it knocked the crap outta me, i then blew down the fuel line to check for obstructions and found no problem there either ( note to self take gas cap off before blowing down the line ....gas tastes terrible) and quite simply i don't know where to go from here . i am in no way a chainsaw expert so any help is greatly appreciated thanks again

Use the primer bulb to fill the carb with gas. Press it untill you don't feel any air bubbles in the fuel line. Excess will route back into the gas tank, so you cannot overprime it. Use full choke, and pull it over about 3-4 times, or untill you hear the saw try to fire. DON'T pull it on full choke more than 5 times, you will flood it! Turn the choke off and pull it a couple more times and it will fire.

Oh, the muffler spark arrester screens clog up something fierce on these saws, which will greatly reduce power- to the point where the saw won't run. Take the screen out and clean it before replacing it. Or throw it away, which is what I do.


Hey, guys- the ONLY reason I know Macs have a primer bulb is because a buddy brought me one to 'fix' after he ran it without bar lube and trashed the bar, chain and sprocket! I'd never own one!

I dont remember it having a primer bulb but I will look tomorrow.

"Burp" it! Remove the air filter, place your finger over the throat of the carb and pull the rope until it f*rts. If you ran it out of fuel ther is a lot of air in the fuel pump (portion of the diaphragm carburetor) the fuel pump cannot pump air so you must prime it. completely blocking the carb off draws a HUGE vaccuum on the fuel supply. I've done this myself on a few saws that were stored dry and it's worked every time. Note: depending on the configuration of the saw you may need a helper to pull the rope while you block the carb and keep the saw from flying around.

My PM605 doesn't have a primer bulb. Mine has sat for as long as 2years and, luckily enough for me, I always seem to pull it over. Make sure your on/off switch is in the correcy position and working properly too. Try starting it w/o the air cleaner and put a couple of drops of mix down the throat of the carb. That is unless, you are flooding it to begin with. Don't use mine much anymore due to the manual oiler.

Cool technic, nerver heard of that. Sound good. I've got a 4yr old, a 2yr old and a 3 month old so, I feel pretty confident w/my burping training. And as far as the far**ng thing, well, we all seem to manage. Thanks fore the tip.

If this other stuff doesn't work, you might want to try a carb kit. All the old saws I've bought after sitting for a while had diaphragms that were rock hard. No way they could start.
