Are the Taiwanese subcontracting to China for castings etc?.. seems like a growing trend.

Do you have to meet any EPA requirements for these kits? I can see that parts are likely exempt, but as kit of parts to build a unit?

I'm guessing until such time that "they" actually require us to register our saws with some agency that will just waste said monies in administration and require safety inspections ala motor vehicles, I think us chainsaw junkies will continue to fly under the radar.................................

Did anyone else see that black helicopter fly by lately??

Stihl China might be making the parts. Wonder how much lead will be in the paint. BTW, is it illegal to remove carb limiter tabs and open up mufflers? I won't tell if you won't.

The John Deere parts model is what Stihl should embrace. I have a registered JD account and can pull up parts diagrams, listings, prices, etc.

Then I can add them to my cart and buy them online. They get shipped right to my door.

However the nearby dealer gets the credit even though the parts are drop shipped. They all are priced at MSRP.

If Stihl embraced this model there would be fewer lost sales to Ebay and the aftermarket. The dealers and consumers would be happier too.

It's easier to get Dolmar/Makita parts then Stihl!!! (especially given waisted time/gas).

    I must be missing something....

....or have been just lucky because I have never had ANY difficulty getting parts for my Stihls, early or late model. I have had to wait for an order or two, but never boned. Obviously some dealers carry crates of old, out-dated parts and a plethera of new stock while others carry the bare minimum. I just seem to gravitate to the ones with packrat tendencies. Not all dealers are created equal in any business, but the ones that are good get my loyal patronage.

While it might be nice to order parts online, I personally like to actually go into my local saw shop for stuff and drool over the shiny new stuff sitting on the self...... I don't see any need for Stihl to change their business model, if online parts ordering is important for you, choose the company that allows it.

Very good point on the subcontracting of parts from China. All of the castings, including the cylinders, crankcases, flywheels, crankshafts are made in Taiwan by the manufacturer. That is their primary business. As for many of the smaller parts, I don't have any idea where they are made, and perhaps they source from several countries. These days, so many parts are from so many places. I do know the main bearings come from Japan, some of the fasteners are from Korea, and some ignitions are from China. But that is all I know. The factory stands behind the 1 year warranty, which is the most important part.

As for the EPA requirements, we are only supplying replacement parts, and the kit is really not a kit at all. There are no instructions on how to assemble it or any manuals. The set includes one of each individual part for the listed saw. Technically, someone could assemble a complete saw with the set, but that is up to the end user.

We have been supplying 038 and 070 parts to the South American market for a couple of years now, mainly because of the weak dollar. Every year we kept offering more and more parts to the point that we have nearly every part available. The 038 and 070 are very popular down there, and as long as we are stocking parts for that market, we figured we would offer them here in the states.

How could they do that? You don't include a spark plug!
