No more 3/8 RM chain from Stihl??????

I was at the Eugene Stihl shop yesterday and wanted a 3/8 RM loop for my 16 inch bar. I bought a 24 inch 3/8 RM loop there a month ago. The guy there trys to sell me 3/8 RCS3 chain, and says that Stihl stopped making RM about 4-6 months ago. I told him he was full of it, as they still have RM listed on the USA Stihl web site. Is he right, or is he just trying to sell me some RSC3 loops that they have?

I need chains that run good in cruddy wood here, as I cut a lot of old stumps flush to the ground, salvage slash wood for firewood, and cut all kinds of trees with dirt and mud and sand in and on them. RM runs good and stays sharp longer with crud. Anyway, I think that RM2 is the most common safety chain that Stihl makes, so I am befuddled as to why they would stop making RM without the safety links.

RM2 is gone. RM is available, as is RM skip. We sell it all the time to stump removal companies etc. It's on StihlNW's list of available chains.

The chain is no longer PRE-PACKAGED in loops for the NW, but is available in 25 and 100 foot reels. If you dealer won't stock the reels to make chains, just buy 25 feet. Negotiate a realistic price first - the "list" is crazy, but the dealer had a very good margin.

Damn, the goon thought I wanted RM2??? Geez... I'll have to go in there with chaps, corkies and suspenders on next time and sling the Olympyk over my shoulder with the 25 inch bar on it and slur my words and talk about spars and cable yarding and phart a lot...

Ask for a chain less than 18 inches and they think you are a homeowner. Oh well, at least I can stihl get my 3/8 RM chains. I sould rpoll'y buy a roll and start making my own loops anyway.

Yah, problem with that store is that while they (usually) have all the tid-bit parts in stock there, it is also a brightly lighted gleaming store with all the Stihl saws and blowers and whackers... just about everything Stihl makes except cut-off saws. I have a pair of corkers, along with climbing spurs... maybe put the spurs on over the chaps and make a gawd-auful racket in there, leaving sawdust and holes and marks on their clean floor and toss empty beer cans around while swinging the saw dangerously close to the fancy displays.

Or, maybe I will just to to the Cottage Grove store and get what I need. They have all the bars and loops all on a shelf out front of the counter, and real sawyers in and out of there all the time. They also have a full line of Stihl saws, along with Huskies. They would not mind if I wore corks in there. They sell them, and have an old wooden floor.

Some other guy in WA was saying that most of the Stihl shops up there do not carry RM chain.

Yep most don't, because most don't make their own loops... and "nobody" askes for it". Nutz...

I use it most of the time. I could care less about the tiny decrease in initial cut speed.. I'm still cutting while the others are "touching up" their chisel chain. But then... I'm mainly firewooding, not falling.

Well, of late here I am doing a lot of falling, but I am cutting most of that for firewood. Though we have about 2 truckoads of logs down here now. Too bad the log prices are so low. It is more valuable to us as firewood at these prices.

As for making loops... I have both options here. Local store near here in Drain with reels and he will only make loops, and places like Eugene that only sell pre-made loops. Local guy is selling his store, and will not buy a reel of 3/8 RM full comp or my purchases. He does have RM skip though.

As for cutting speed, I hardly notice it. I also sharpen at a 30-0 angle. 35 gets dull faster.

    RSC3 - Chisel safety instead of semi-chisel (in 3/8). RMC3 is available in 0.325
