Thread: fitting a decomp to a 288 jug

    fitting a decomp to a 288 jug

    hey all, im rebuilding 2 288's

    1 has a decomp and the other does not... just a blank in the jug where it would go...

    i cant imagine it would be to hard to drill and tap to fit one

    just wondering when i drill through to the inside of the jug how it will effect the nikasil????

    will it create a point to start coming away???

    any tips fitting these???

    Low cutter speed and high pressure can make the coating flake off. Use a sharp drill bit and keep the RPM up and feed pressure down as you cut through. Then champher the hole a little bit and you will be fine.

    cheers mate,

    umm....... how would i chamfer a hole that is no biger than 1/8th, on the inside of a 54mm jug, right up near the head????

    here's what i do on the 460, 510 and 5100 Dolmar's---- drill 3/32 thru, low speed and make sure your straight and steady with that small of a bit (will snap easy). I made a box jig and bolt the cyl to the box. (use a drill press) then i drill 9/16 deep with a 11/32 bit ,(use a bit stop). then 10mm 1.0 tap, use oil when drilling and tapping.
    don't worry about the nikasil with that small of a bit and your above the ring/rings anyway. it will drill a little harder when you git to the nikasil-- don't force the bit. ( practice on a bad cyl.)

    compression leakage, same reason guys build saws and put a blank plug in them, but it is still a place to bleed off compression.

    My 660 doesn't have a decomp anymore

    A small diamond coated ball shaped burr, on a 4" shaft. If you didn't chamfer it, it would probably be fine, it just makes me feel better to make sure I don't leave any loose edges.
