    Hey Mac guys! Ebay 797/125

Ebay seller saw king is selling a 797 with what is apparently a 125 motor. He is saying that this is a big upgrade. I thought that aside from the av, right hand start, and carb that there weren't that many differences/advantages. This hybrid won't have the 125's av, so what are the advantages/ differences. I have both saws and my 797 seems pretty strong and I don't see a huge power advantage in my 125. Help me out guys. I would understand if he was claiming that it had an MC101 motor.

He's a salesman. You have to make whatever you have sound like what someone else needs/wants.

The porting of the original 797 block should make more power than the sp125 block.

Depending on the block- if it has a late generation SP-125 block, then it may have a smaller combustion chamber. I'm not really sure what the advantage would be other than that.

Hoss, Remember who is selling the saw.
    That says it all.

    I'm like you, I have both 797 and SP125
and i don't see much of a difference in power.
But i don't have any real big wood to test these
    old monsters.

    That's what I thought too.

Also didn't the 797 share a coil with the 101? Another thing, all the 125's that I have seen or heard about had a fixed high jet on the carb. (I know that some of them must have been adjustable, as mine is now). Something else to consider is that some 125's had chrome bores instead of the earlier iron liner. So if you scuff the cylinder you cannot rebore it. I have seen tons of overbore mac pistons on ebay. Overall this does not sound like an "upgrade to me".

No, definately not an upgrade for us
but might be for a novice.
    I believe the CP125 and SP125 both
had iron sleaves but the SP125C had
    the chrome bore.

I am curious to see what it sells for
and who might be the new owner.

Well i've only seen one mc101 motor (I know there many versions) wich is the big daddy of mac motors and from what I have seen on my saws (super797 & 125) the architecture of the 797 has more in common with the 101 than the 125 does.

You're pretty much correct. The 797 has a wide, flat exhaust port and port timing very close to the 101, 101A, 101AA, and 101B blocks. Same ignition also (horizontal mounts). The stock 797 head has a pretty big combustion chamber but the CP-125 block has a bigger combustion chamber with similar port timing and port shapes.

The SP-125 and SP-125c blocks have large, oval shaped exhaust ports with lower intake and transfer timing and were meant to make their power at a lower RPM range. They do have slightly smaller CCs than the CP-125 but use the same diagonal mounted coil as the 10-10, SP-81, 805, etc.

Lee is correct, only the SP-125c has the chrome bore stock. Unfortunately it was a common practice back in the day to repair steel-sleeved saws with a new chrome liner block as opposed to boring the sleeve out, as it was a cheaper at the time to just replace the block. So you'll encounter a lot of standard SP-125 saws that have a chrome-lined block.
