I don't like the new style caps. I always have a screwdriver with me. It's in my hand out of habit when I'm refueling. I don't like how I have to mess around with not getting dirt in the tanks.

I have never had a leak though. But I only have the new caps on my 260. (I made sure to get the old style caps on the 066).

If a man falls a tree in the forest, and it doesn't make a sound, is no one there to hear it, or should he regret a lifetime of not wearing hearing protection?

    Then you are running lean?
Jim, Thats exactly my point. The 260 is way lean from the factory with no way to fix it except to swap out jets.

I prefer the new caps to the old..don't need to remember th screwdriver to do/undo.. but, in getting those (certainly on the 026/MS280), Stihl have snatched back one of my favourites, tyhe semi transparent fuel tanks. I was sorely tempted to buy a Husky 346XP, but rejected it because the equivalent Stihl (026) had a transparent fuel tank and the Husky didn't. Disappointed to find my new MS260 fueltank is not really transparent.. after using the old ones, having to constantly open the cap to check petrol is not better than simply looking at the tank..and the sort of cutting I do, you forget how much fuel is left..so the transparent tanks were a help to me.

To summarise.. wasn't broke, shouldn't have fixed!!

Sorry, but I don't think every 260 we sold this year left the shop running lean.
All I have done to a MS260, non pro, was put on a new handle, top cover, and muffler, where the guy dropped something on it and broke it.

I usually top off the tank any time I check how full it is.

Though all my saws I work with have transparent tanks. 066.

I like the new caps. Even with the old caps, some dirt will get in there. Then every two or three years, you gotta change the filter, no big deal.
If it's a real big problem, try sharpening your saw once in a while, you won't have all that dust. Also, don't slobber gas and oil all over when you refill, then the big chips from the sharp saw won't stick around the caps.

Jim, I amy refering to the 260 pro. My saw has the issue as do my freinds. Treeclimbers saw also has the issue, three saws that all have the same thing wrong tells me that its not a isolated problem.

JimL wears Stihl underwear. You just don't get it, do you? I think I'll keep my 028 and 038.

My dealer is good, but there is only so much you can do with that stupid fixed jet. He actually gave me a full adjust carb out of the scrap pile for the saw. I havent got a chance to put it on yet.

And I bought an adjustable carb last night. I should have it by Thursday.
My friends and collegues on this site have helped me 100 times more than my dealer. And I have a relatively good Stihl dealer locally. Jim- I like Stihl saws. I just don't like the new
'improvements' that are designed to idiot-proof the saws but in reality make them practically unfit for use. Since you are running 066's, you have not had the pleasure of trying to run a saw with a fixed jet- YET. Come back next year after Stihl screws up the 066 and spout your company song.

    lean

Yep, it's lean. And it is past the carb. All you are doing is compensating for it.
Any saw is only as good as the maintenance it recieves.
66 hotsaw, 034, 009 (It was my Dad's only saw, I will keep it going forever.)
Fuel is like fine wine, good clarity, nice bouquet, let the saw drink it.

ST- I considered your words of advice and tried to test my saw myself for any air leak even though my dealer said I had no leak. I started the saw and set it at fast idle. Then I took a can of aerosol carb cleaner and sprayed all around the bottom of the jug, spark plug and any other seals I could get to. I never got any change of pitch or RPM from the saw. To the best of my knowledge, I do not have a leak.
