    found my stolen 272xp..w/cracked case!

my 272XP was stolen off my porch 1.5 yrs ago. Some scum bag came down off BLM and took off with few things. While headn' up to scout for elk recently ...I found the saw stashed under a brush pile about 500yds from my place, back up on BLM! Bar is gone and it was covered with dirt, needles and pretty beat up overall. I did a quick wipe down, poured a bit of gas in the carb..and yep...it started!! A bit later I noticed the case is cracked...right around the bar studs. Its bad...I think the thief did it while taking the bar off..or whacked the whole saw while holding the bar or some other moronic thing...
Anyway...I have a 61 sitting here...does anyone know if that lower will work on the 272? I replaced the ring..compression is about 150..and the piston has some very light markings...rebuilt the carb...Finding a decent 272 lower is turning out to be tougher than I anticipated..not sure if its worth the expense or trouble..any thoughts?? It might become a parts saw for my replacement 272...
    ...Thanks...

The 268 has the same lower as the 272, so should give you more options.

Its too bad that some moronic idiot had to make off with your saw to begin with, but at least you have some of it back for parts.
    CAD....real bad

thanks for the heads up....I am thinking its time to retire it.. become a parts back-up saw.....and yea..would 'a been nice to find the guy.. .but..short of that..what has helped is the skid that they were using to access the area up there has been tank-trapped..there has been so much damage to re-prod and equipment they are finally closing things off....so no more townies or dirt bags can move in up there...at least they can't drive in..and its waaaaaay to far out here to walk......

    As jocob said

Why not just put the whole 272xp top end on the 61? It goes together easy and makes an even better saw of the 61.
Both of the saws pictured have 272xp top ends.........Bob

Glad you found your saw, sorry to hear it was messed up. At least you have some closure which should give you a little piece of mind. We had a break into our garage in Michigan back in the 70's and they stole a lot of custom parts off some race buggies. It really pisses the bajesus out of you, for sure. About 3 years later I received a call from the State Troopers at the South Haven Post to come an identify some items. Sure enough they had the parts and the thieves which had been busted for something else. If you ever dealt with Michigan State Troopers back in the day, no explanation is necessary. If you have not, no explanation is possible. It was a good day for me, not the thieves.

the sposkesman for the Delaware State Police said this year " there is NO correlation between the down turn in the economy and the increase of thefts" .....

I will let that sink in for a minute...

    .
    .
    .
    .
now he also said that its our own fault for the increase in thefts... now some of these thefts were like copper gutters and downspouts, iron grates out of the road, copper wire from job sites and from the telephone company work yard, the wiring and motors off of center pivot irrigation out of farmers fields.
how do you secure some of that? Also one farmer had 23 systems... 10 of them got hit... he said he was 'packing' from now on.. and he inspects his systems 2x a week now... and if he caught someone he would take care of them... cop told him he could NOT do that... that is wrong.. some of the systems are in some pretty remote areas.... how is he gonna defend himself? you cant even protect your property anymore... sad

I had a nice old Stihl cut-off saw pinched out of a site shed some years back by thieving pikey scum. I was as mad as hell, I'd just stuck a new piston and pot on it.

Years later, the site hut had been comissioned into its proper role, and surrounded with 12' of razor mesh, surrounded by 2 base coils of 2' razor wire, and topped with another 2' razor coil. One night, some drunken bum threw an old board onto the top coil, climbed over, pulled out a window, climbed in, drunk a load of beer, left the cans there and climbed out using some spare concrete blocks stacked into a corner.

    Lessons learned:

    - Don't leave anything outside that they can use to get in
    - If they get in make sure they can't leave
    - Secure tools in a building, not a site shed
    - People will break in for no reason at all
    - A drunk will try some really stupid stuff and often get away with it

Happily, the cabin now has 3-way CCTV and a line of Electrocoil along the top, hooked up to a repulse shock unit. the next hard-of-thinking bell-end to try climbing over will not only be strobed to within an inch of his life as he thrashes around in the razor wire, he will be filmed doing it.

Nobody has tried since the 'upgrades'.

    shame...
    Arsenal inventory:
    Husqvarna 266SE (195 PSI!)
    Stihl MS170 (borrowed)
    Stihl 023 (a bit poorly)
Stihl 011AV (150 PSI, spending a year dead for tax purposes)

grotty old axe, wants a new head, could do with a new handle.

I wonder if he also thinks that the increase in prostitution is our fault too due to free contraception at all the open door clinics....
