A buddy has a old 3400, it looks well built and has some power. It will shake your fillings loose in 10 minutes though.

I have one that That I bought for 40.00 9 yrs ago. have put 1 fuel filter in and thats it. Her nickname is old faithful. The 245 is it's big brother and you can tell. I have had a few of them and enjoy them as well. The 85cc 5400,5200 and the 8500 are awesome saws I have all of them and run 36'' bars on them with no problem. These large poulans will run with or past anything in it's class, people will argue this. My buddy runs a 385 husky I run past him with these 85cc poulans and my ms460 does'nt touch these saws. I also have 2 3400's and the 306 out runs them and has more torque.

My father has an old Dayton, orange colored saw, I think it's a rebadged Poulan 245 SA, does that sound right?....if so are they as good as the stories my father tells me about it?...I never really used it, but he used to run it with a 20" bar...I think it's around 75cc or so.

Well what I was trying to say is a 245A is the exact same saw as a 306A but is 4.5ci or 75cc.

Well its almost exactally the same, the tank cover and air cleaner are taller, and the front handle bar is also taller to clear the taller tank cover! Oh and the decals say 245A instead of 306A.

    One of my favorite Poulans.

Yes its possible, most Daytons were rebadged Poulans. Lots of micro 25's, S25's, 361's, 400's, 306's and 245's.

The 306/245 Poulans were great saws, built like tanks and reliable as an old Bulova watch.
I have owned a couple and used a bunch of others they as a rule will not idle if you set them down tho. And being from a time when men were men and women were too, they had ZERO anti-vibe and ZERO chainbrake if that is important to you.
As you can see by my sig I am quite a fan of the 3400-3700-4000 series.
They also had no chainbrake but they did have..................Countervibe........which was a vast improvement at the time but looks somewhat archaic by todays standards.
I would love to find a reasonable 4000 p/c kit. I have enough parts to assemble another 3400 but would like to do a 4000.

How well will the old Dayton (poulan 245sa) fare agains a modern 75cc saw? Obviously in cutting power/torque and speed. I know they are not as safe or as comfortable to operate.

The torque leaves my new ms460 in the dust. 245 runs very strong. the sa on the 245 comes with .325 pitch which is a joke for this saw. 245a has 3/8 chain like it should have.
