Some jobs in life are un-deserving of having a timeclock - Cutting wood is one of them. Thats like saying how long does it take to catch enough fish for supper?

Of those four hours, how many minutes are actually spent with the saw at full throttle, cutting? Makes you wonder how much faster you'd be with a bigger saw...

Of course, if you have kids to carry and stack your wood for you...

I tell my wife the same thing, no matter what I do. I'll usually bracket the estimate. When I did a brake job on my FIL's car many years ago, it was a mess. Stripped bolts, bad brake line, wrong pads, etc. I had originally told her an hour, but it ended up being closer to 4, with the extra trip to the parts store (45 minutes round trip). Ever since then the answer is 1-6 hours. I've done a set of pads in 40 minutes when all goes well, it's nice when that happens.

How long will you be cutting wood? 2-8 hours, don't plan on me for lunch.

    Pee break from morning coffee
Where the ^&#$ are my work gloves?
spend 10 mins looking for work gloves
find work gloves tucked into work boots where I had put them only hours earlier-
Start chainsaw, can't find that wood I just found.
Turn off chainsaw and walk around for 5 mins to find wood I scouted for earlier.
    Start chainsaw
    Cut wood
drop first big round on foot- mother ^&*#%$!
load cut rounds into pickup or trailer
    take to woodshed to split
    gas up splitter
gas runs out due to rotted fuel hose
    drive to autozone, buy hose
    return to repair splitter
    where is that hose clamp?
No really, where did I put it?
    S&*$!
Rig fuel hose with zip tie
    start splitter
    split wood
fuel hose comes off, fuel sprays all over the place
    Jesus &&#^$ YOU ^*^$$^ Piece of @#^#^(!
Mother covers children's ears, nearby horses are spooked, crows fly out of trees.
    Fix fuel hose again
    load split wood into truck/trailer
    drive home
Wife asks you how your day was, before you can answer she asks "What took you so long?"
Leave room to avoid capitol murder charges.
    Stack wood
Drop split round onto same foot.

Go inside and take a shower

    Elapsed time 12 hours

Just so you can have a pretty fire in the fireplace, for your family, who all went to the movies while you were in the shower!

That is how it usually goes for me anyway, and I love every minute of it.
Love it! Especially the "What took you so long?" line. I get that a lot.

A little hint for you. With all the equipment most folks own buy your gas line by the reel and the clamps by the bag. It saves a lot of trips.

I agree that 4-6 hours is right. I buy log length so felling and hauling are not an issue. Just cut, split and stack.
