    New shim idea for sharpener

I thought I would just list this separate from the other northern sharpener thread , For all of those looking for the shim for the vise swivel section , I found a piece of brass angle material at a Renco hardware store , its .016 thick and 5/32 x 5/32 and 12'' long cost was about 1.00 , I brought it home and got out the heavy duty kitchen scissors and cut it down the middle leaving a little more on one side , the other side curled up as I cut it . I took the piece with just a little edge left on it , it stayed straight buy the way and gently ran it over the bench grinder removing the lip and then cleaned up the edges and burr's with a flat file . Cut and fit the length and slightly bend the two ends to fit in near the one protruding bump on the casting , use the bump on the left side in the 9:00 position , worked great !! No more slop !! I don't know if you have renco's near you so try one of those hardware stores that have everything or maybe a hobby store . Good luck!!

I had a slightly different approach- I'm assuming you're talking about the "slop" in the vise table section. I couldn't get it solid no matter how hard I tried to tighten it. I dissassebled it, removed much of the grease and custom fit a piece of buckskin leather. Worked like a charm. I have no intention of grinding other than 0. I also removed a couple of small round bearings and springs. If you need it to tilt for full chisel, etc, this may not be a good idea.
