    Pawn Shops

I just got back from vaction in Florda and I had a bunch of time to kill and found about 20 or so pawn shops. I thought I would look and see if I could find a good deal on a saw or two. I thought wrong. Most of the shops had a Wild thing or two, for $100 give or take $10-20. Two shops had 2 trashed MS440's I grabed onto the recoil and the saw dropped to the end of the rope, $550, the guy said he would let it go for $525. All the other saws were priced $20-30 from new. One shop had a 066 that looked like a tree fell on it, they wanted $600 for it, said I could have it for $500 cash. Needless to say, I didnt come home with a new saw.

Anyone have any luck finding deals at pawn shops? I didnt have any luck. Even on power tools I could find just as good of deals at HD, or Menards when they run sales.
I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me.

i agree for the most part. i did find a 394 (v. good cond.) for $205 OTD, with a brand new dremel set thrown in.
most of what i see are WT's. one shop had a shinny for $100 that was good condition. i went back to check it a couple of weeks later and it was gone.

I know down in NC every pawn shop I went to had junk and wanted you to pay like double what it was worth... What in hell are they thinking??? Don't they know they'd sell alot more for good deals? They usually only give you like $100 for a 440 if your lucky...

I quit checking out pawn shops about 10 or so years ago.

It used to be that a person could find some great deals in pawn shops, but then they started researching prices and set their prices a bit below new prices.

It's been about 7 years or so since I even went into a pawn shop as their pricing was such that I could buy new with service and a warranty for just a little bit more cash.

It seems to me like almost anything I find used is selling for too much. Once in a while I find something in a thrift shop nobody else would want.

    biggen,
Most are as you describe and when you find out they're WAY overpriced...don't bother going back. They'll ALWAYS be overpriced. But don't give up. There are shops that have good deals and the only way to find them is to be diligent.

and the price on the shelf is not the final price. it will depend on what the loan amount was, and how much if any, repayment they have received, and how long they have had the item.

In my time I've bought 3 STIHL's from the pawn shops.
Just after the 30 day guarantees they all had scored cylinders and became part saws.

No more pawn shops for this fella.

Its the same around here, the guys who run these shops prey on folks who are short of cash, then turn around and sell the item for next to new price.
Last year one of our local shops had a really nice 372.Price was 800 bucks! Before I had a chance to set the saw back on the shelf, the guy came over to push me into a purchase.I asked him if he knew that this saw could be bought brand new for less money, but his reply blew me away.
He said, "Yeah, but this saw has already been broken in.You can get right to work without having to idle the saw for the next 10 hours."
I couldnt get out of that shop fast enough to suit me.

You can find good deals at pawn shops, but you gotta do some looking. About 8 years ago, I found a decent condition Husky 394 for $250, and I talked him down to $200. That being said, I've got a buddy who bought a brand new .243 rifle from Wal Mart, went hunting with it a few times, shot two deer, and sold it to a local pawn shop for more than he paid brand new for it. You got to know what stuff is worth.

people who pawn items are not "prey." they are willing participants, who most likely have abused the priviledge to borrow money from other sources and don't have another source for a loan.
