    056 mag vs 064

Can anyone tell me anything about these two saws? I am going tomorrow to look at some saws. The guy has a 056 Mag II for $300, he uses it for milling and says it runs fine. He has the chainbreak taken off so he can mill bigger logs he says. He also has two 064's, both are in a box. He got one that had a bad crank bearing but the rest of the saw was fine, and the second saw was a parts saw with a good crank and bearings. He said he took the saws apart a few few months ago, didnt have a manuel, got buizy and is not comfortable putting it back together. He wants $200 for those two.

I am going to look at them tommorow night, but would like some info on these saws. What is the CC's and weight of the 056 and 064? Also what kind of parts are around for them?

I am not afraid to put the 064 back together if it is a good deal.

I am looking for a saw that will complement the saws in my sig.

The 064 has a much more modern design, very similiar to the 460 and 660. It will rev higher than the 056. The 056 will have more torque and pull a longer bar. I'd rather have the 064 myself.

I don't know much about the 64's but if there in box, have fun. From what I hear it's a good saw. If the 056 mag II runs good ,it's a good deal for $300 bucks. Ask if the sale includes the chain brake set up. the 56 is 94 cc 7hp . slow 12K rpm saw but unstopable, torque. If you want to make a quick buck buy the 56 give it a bath throw it on ebay and you'll get 400 + easy.

I am looking for a big saw for myself. I am doing some searching and am reading that the 056 is a torque monster, but the 064 has awsome power to weight.

What size bar will a 056 pull with full chisle chain? The 064 too.

No problem with a 36" on a 056, maybe more.

If I had the coin I would buy them both, along with that 056 with no spark. $650 would buy me 4 saws. If money were no issue.............

I would pass on ALL of these saws. Why ?

    056 --
A saw thats's been milled with to any extent has had about the HARDEST toughest life you can put a saw through. WOT for a long time! Might still run fine, but would you rather have a 100,000 mile truck or a 50,000 truck for the SAME money! ?? it always matters on the dealers lot...
$300. is NOT a super deal.
    Otherwise, older, but great saw.

    064 --
box job! OEM STIHL parts prices can make grown men cry at times. Better
know everything about those 064's in the box. They virually always need more than just what an owner says [bearings] >> fuel lines [ain't cheap], rings, expensive air-filter, on & on.... easy to put another $150+ in parts in it -- if it doesn't need a lot! Be careful & negotiate.

I would find some other saws. I've bought plenty off of Ebay that were just fine. Ck. locally.
    Keep looking.

I have an 064 sitting in my garage right now...My uncles brother asked if I could get it running for him...It was a little on the worn out side, but I tore it down and cleaned it up and don't have but $40 in parts in it...I cleaned the cylinder and put a set of rings in it and had 140lbs of compression after the install...Have not check it since the 2 tanks of gas, but it seem to be getting stonger...If I could pick up an 064 for a good price I would own one, even though my 460 feels about the same...Good luck...

I ran an 064 for a couple of years and now I have a MagII. Unless you are cutting for production the difference in speed is meaningless. But, the 064 is quite noticeably lighter. Neither will have decompression which will become a problem at some point in your life. The Mag II is built like a tank. Cylinders are hard to find for both if it ever needs to be replaced.

If you just want to cut a little, get an 064. If you like cool old saws that are still hell on wheels get the 056 Mag. Or, get all of it.

    John,
I think you summed it up pretty well. I agree.

The 064 will pull a 36" bar as well.

I don't know about the saws in question, but the 064 is quite possibly my favorite saw Stihl ever made, mostly because of the excellent power to weight ratio and overall feel of the saw. If you want even more power out of the 064, you can swap in a 066/660 P&C or even a 066/660 BB kit without much work.

If you do buy the 064(s), let me know as I think I need a couple of parts you'll very likely have left over.

    056 over 064, and 066 over a 064

I would go with the 64. I love mine! It sounds like you may have enough parts to make one whole saw. Sometimes you have to take a chance. If most of two 64s are there then that would be what I would do.

    easy one

56 Mag all day. You won't be disappointed... Trust me on that one. If you don't get it, I know a ton of people that'd buy a 56 for $300 in decent shape...

Pull the spark plug and shine a light in and look at the cylinder walls best you can with the piston all the way down. Make sure its not all scored up.
