    Cool 066 muffler mod pics

    JB,
Here are the pics we talked about this morning. The first one is an un cut 066 muffler baffle and the second is the cut baffle.

I plan on doing some tymed cuts on Sunday with a 046 (stock muffler) and the same saw with a dual port muffler, which looks similar to the 066 muffler.

Why not remove the whole baffle?

    Wink

I was told, the early 066 mufflers, would crack.. The baffle area strengthens the muffler and prevents this from happening.

Good point Steve, mine has not cracked yet with the baffle removed. I want to experiment with spacers to extend the exhaust port to enhance flow..

Can that be done with most saws? Or does the 066 have a muffler unique to itself?

thanks for all the info steve. Will that new muffler for that part number you sent me be just the outside cover, or front, or will it be the whole muffler? I wondered about how to tackle that baffle. The darn thing is welded in place pretty good and does not come out very easy. It looks like you just tok 1/2 of that face off and not all. yes?

    Red face baffle

    JB,
Yep tha's all you remove, per KD... My buddy did that one on his mill, but I did one for a friend with a carbide bur on a dremel, worked fine. Yes that part number is for the whole muffler complete.
    Steve

I'm told most saws that have been made in the last few years, can gain some performance and durability from opening the exhaust.

    Howdy

A lot of Stihl and Husky mufflers, especially on older models, have no baffle. The 066 is a special case though, as is the 046 because they generate a lot of vibration that would lead an open muffler to cracking. The 064 saws first came with open mufflers and I have about ten or so with big cracks through the back after a few months of use. As far as spacers go, Stihl actually makes a spacer which allows you to put a newer 036 muffler on an 034 or a newer 066 muffler on an older 064. They do seem to help a little as far as scavening goes, but I'd put the gains in the 1 or 2% category, not much at all. Whoever did the work in those pictures did an excellent job.

I cant think of any reason why a longer exhaust tract on a non tuned exhaust would do anything.

    Exhaust Flow

A hole in a disc will often have worse flow characteristics than a short run of pipe of the same diameter. Turbulance versus a semblance of laminar flow. Perhaps this is behind any performance gain with a spacer between muffler and exhaust port rather than any change in resonant tuning factor.

Crofter, while what you are sying may be true. The exhaust config on a saw is already a short pipe so simply lenr\gthining it will have little effect. Besides the real restriction is in the muffler outlet as we all know. free this up and flow simply isnt a issue. In a two stroke bulk flow is rarely a issue.

relation of restriction at muffler exit versus Exhaust port

BWALKER, Because of the surge storage capacity of the muffler chamber, the muffler exit has all the time from one discharge till the next, which is 360 degrees, to conduct the total somewhat cooled exhaust volume: the port to muffler entrance must conduct the full, hot volume within the port uncovered duration (certainly less than 360 degrees), so restriction at the port/muffler junction can be relatively more critical. High velocity flow through a disc shaped opening to a vessel causes more turbulance than through a short, parallell sided tube. Because of these factors I can see where a short spacer between the cylinder and the muffler MIGHT be a slight performance enhancer, but I am mostly just quibbling to get attention!

Where is Fish and we'll settle this.

Red face Dual port 066 muffler

    Steve here...
Here are a few close ups of the dual port muffler that I put on my 066.

This first pic is a close up of the muffler. You can see on the left the 5/8 inch hole or opening. The standard epa mufflers are 3/8 hole. On the right of this pic you can see the long oval front cover port. Thus dual port muffler The long port is about 7/16 wide and 1 1/4 long. The standard muffler only has the single 3/8 port. Talk about cooking a motor!!
