    Unhappy What a shame!

    I just received a pm from a member that has been here since '02 and has neary 500 posts. He was asking me if he could pm me questions about climbing. He's worried to ask the questions here because he's a landscaper that wants to learn how to climb, and he thinks he'll get flamed for asking beginner questions.

    Sure, more people should use the search function initially for a specific question, but that doesn't mean they should be fearful to just ask.

    It's a shame we have some people here that get bent outta shape when someone asks a question, or talks about something they are doing that is wrong. Maybe they don't realize it is wrong, and that's why they are asking. It's our job then to set em straight, without flaming them. If they post a thread in the wrong forum, let the mods deal with it. Maybe send the poster a pm telling them nicely, instead of making an ass-chewing post for all to view.

    Perhaps that explains all the lurkers. They are scared to actually register and make a post because they see what happens to others.

    Hey, I'm a nice guy, and I always will be. Don't ever be afraid to ask MB a question! And you shouldn't ever have to worry about asking ANYBODY a sincere question.

    Responding to this individual's questions via pm short-changes all the members here who may benefit from the question/answer.

    So PLEASE! Let's not scare off any new blood, eh?

    It is a shame to think that you can't ask questions on a forum without getting a earful of nonsense. I have been in this biz for a long time and know that most in it are always willing to offer good advice, but be prepared to hear some nonsense with it. Learn to filter and not take it personally. I know the search function works but a lot of info on it it 'old' since new techniques and gear is being created and used its good to ask the questions again.
    Never be afraid to ask a question even it seems silly 'cause the answer might save you some trouble or prevent an injury.
    We the willing, led by the unknowing are doing the impossible for the ungrateful, and have done so much for so long with nothing, we can now do anything with nothing.

    Well put!

    Why isn't there more self-policing here? If someone cops an attitude and jumps on someone why don't other members call them out more often? Is that the sole domain of the mods or owner? If so, they're falling down on the job.

    It doesn't do our profession any good to perpetuate or condone this behavior.

    If needed, use the PM or email for personal attacks.

    If you look back in the archives there are many newbies who have joined and have developed into respectable arborists.
    Carl, Neb, Rborist Mike Maas to name a few have all come a long way

    Perhaps a junior climbing forum would be the solution ?

    That is all a shame; and has existed as one of my worst nightmares for this place.

    Once again i fear; for every single such incident we catch knowledge of; 20 more have slipped by unnoticed, whether never signing up, never posting, or doing so just briefly.

    i don't think such an atmosphere is conducive to the original intent to this place; making such things hijacking the whole effort; and debilitating the existance here for some into survival rather than sharing exchange. As with trees, survival reactions are not as refined as those not made under stress; reaching for fuller capacity.

    The depth of this place, TB, ISA has been more than about any classroom to me; perhaps save the actual field. But even there i need calm focus; not distracted by pushing and shoving; mebbe a lil'joking to keep it moving; but nothing to derail the flow of the work at hand; perhaps that is a lesson to learn here too. As any other system; there is only so much energy that shouldn't be wasted on 'counter-target' actions.

    Too well i take notice; that this is not someone with no or few posts in; but somehow is stunted back from particicpating even after giving it a good start, getting over the first jitters whatever. i find that a very dreary barometer of some of the dynamics mentioned. i do like the fact that the most prolific amongst us; leads; yet is the one also found to be most approachable; and then brings it up to attention.

    Thanx Butch,

    That would be interesting to read in, One of the members here did a small job and let me go with him ( I just groundied for him) to see what it is like in your world of work. I find it interesting and like to learn what I can, I'm not wanting to get into the bizz but it does look like a challenge and I love a challenge ,although I did point out to him I would also like to learn on taking care of a tree more than taking the tree out. By the way WT thanks for taking me along and I would like to go again in the future if you get some more and I can get the time to give you a hand.

    Hi Butch, this is one of your best threads. The biggest loss in life is the loss of human potential. If that's the case then we are all deadbeats. lol.
    Anyway, there is nothing more gratifying than sharing knowledge with someone who is truly interested and aspires to to higher heights. Inspiration is nothing more than seeing ourselves as we could be. Part of the deal is playing host to all the big brother advice along the way.
    The world is full of airchair enthusiasts and if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have an audience. The ones who believe it's in their blood should fear not.

    Sweet! But, how many bad answers does the poster have to suffer thru?

    That's my point.

    Who wants just one answer?

    I think it's time for a poem.
    John

    The Ordinary Man

    If you and I should chance to meet,
    I guess you wouldn't care;
    I'm sure you'd pass me in the street
    As if I wasn't there;
    You'd never look me in the face,
    My modest mug to scan,
    Because I'm just a commonplace
    And Ordinary Man.

    But then, it may be, you are too
    A guy of every day,
    Who does the job he's told to do
    And takes the wife his pay;
    Who makes a home and kids his care,
    And works with pick or pen. . . .
    Why, Pal, I guess we're just a pair
    Of Ordinary Men.

    We plug away and make no fuss,
    Our feats are never crowned;
    And yet it's common coves like us
    Who make the world go round.
    And as we steer a steady course
    By God's predestined plan,
    Hats off to that almighty Force:
    THE ORDINARY MAN.
