    First pro saw

Hey, first post here. I found this forum a few week's ago and I have to admit I love it. There is some great info here and advice which is what I need. I have been doing some small tree work stuff for about 10 years but just a few a year keep busy with other stuff. We have good insurance and do good work and are getting lots of calls for work especially here in Oklahoma since we got hit with a historical ice storm a few weeks ago, anyway to the point I have a husky 350, echo climbing saw, stihl oo9 and a stihl pole saw is a husky 346xp a good next saw or should I go bigger, I try and leave the big stuff to the seasoned pro's?

    Welcome aboard...

A 346xp new addition will out cut the 350, but having a mid range saw already would tend to make me think you would be happier with a larger saw to compliment your array...

If you are never cutting anything bigger, then perhaps not, but then again, I love horsepower so what do I know!

Neither the Bible, the Torah nor the Koran mentions Christmas trees. Yet some secular zealots try to ban Christmas trees on government property, based on the doctrine of "separation of church and state"-- a doctrine found nowhere in the Constitution.

I agree. Get something bigger to go with your 350. That way when you get to someones house with a tree like this:

you won't have any problem slicing it up yourself.

I bought this just before I started grinding stumps as I wanted something to be able to cut a stump off if I needed to. I'm very glad I did.

I grew up with a Husky 51. It was a good saw. Actually it is a good saw. I recently stole it back from my dad and tore it all the way down to clean it and then put it back together but I'm AMAZED at the difference between the two saws. The 394 is a BEAST compaired to the 51. It's nice to be able to pull out the big saw and get busy on a big nasty piece of wood.

yikes... that's a dangerous looking notch!

yep... Tulsa's ice storm was a duzy.

go with a husky 359, it's a good medium sized saw that's affordable.
you just missed out, recently sold a nice 359 on craigslist for $325.

346 would be great for limbing. for larger hardwoods found in Tulsa area, you need some displacement.

just did some take downs on a few ice damaged trees. used a stihl 064 and MS 200T combo.

another good combo is stihl 026 and 046. since you've already got a 350 for limbing duties. you need at least a 60cc class saw. a 372 or MS 460/440 would be better yet.

had several mid sized saws (husky 359, 365 & stihl 034 super), but sold them all after getting 046 and MS 460.

60cc range saws feel marginal in large hardwood.

Gr8scott-you needed a 394 to drop that tree?!?! I'll cut stuff that big in the air with a 357 or maybe a 441. Overkill-what's your bar length? My 395 won't come out with less than a 30".

my 064 with 24in bar come out all the time
gets heavy fast, swinging it around all day.

that's why unless large wood is present or I just want to cut fast.
046 does most of the cutting.

I didn't cut it down I only cut it up and hauled it away. At the time it was my only saw. I have a 20" and a 32" bar for it. That tree was about 36".

i think the original poster needs to get a 372xp and be done.

if he gets the 359,he will again have to by a saw in the future.if the wife doesn't have the jewels in a jar,it may not be a big deal.some people like having the excuse in case they need it.it's already '08 so unless the next 575 is like the first,it's no longer.

OMG! Hey! I think we were separated at birth. gr8scott72 for president! LOL!

Don't know much about the Husqvarna's, but a good medium/heavy saw is the MS441 or MS460. All my saws still have the 0 in font of the #'s, so that tells you the age of my saws. LOL! My favorite larger saws are the 044's and 064's. Lots-o-power without the weight.

I have a bunch of saws, however the combo I bring to jobs the most is a 020T, 026 and 046 magnum. I am not that familiar with the Husky models but IMO you would do well with this type of combination. I perfer to keep all my saws the same brand (although I have 1 Poulan and 1 Echo) that way I only have to go to one dealership and carry a limited amount of extra parts.

I'm a fairly small part-time operation. (3/4 ton P/U, Bandit 65xl chipper, myself and the occasional helper). For bucking the larger stuff, you can't beat the 046.

I just purchased a used 088 this morning. I know they are big and heavy, but I couldn't pass up the deal. There is no replacement for displacement and you cannot have enough saws.

if you like stihl...i def. second this.

I have a 441...the newer version to the 044 or 440....but in your situation i would maybe even go to the 460. A little bit more...but more displacment.

Look at all the cute little tractors!!
    LAZY & CRAZY

If they ban cell phone use while driving I'll have to go
    back to reading the paper.

Wise men say raise faceshield BEFORE spitting out chew.

Wipe that smile off your face! That's a WORK saw!
